Okay, ever since I watched the movie 'Stay Alive', I've had this wierd... I wouldn't exactly call it 'fascination'... with Elizabeth Bathory. It's just the fact that she actually existed, and that she did what she did is oddly interesting. If you don't know who she is, she's a woman who lived in the early 1600s, and was known to have tortured and killed many young women, bathing in their blood because she thought it kept her young. Some called her The Blood Countess.
So anyhoo, who's heard of her? Post what you know about her here, pictures even.

I hope this is supposed to be under 'History'. If it's not, just let me know.

My father and I watched a TV show on her once. It was neat, and creepy. Wasn't she like a Hungarian royal woman? Although what she did was neat by my standards, it was also really creepy. o-o; I have a slight fascination with vampires, and the fact that she took it to that extreme always intrigued me. :3

Yeah, I think she was Hungarian.
I know what you mean, lol.
I thought what she did was really creepy,
but y'know, intriguing, too.

I'm writing a story about her, well, not specifically about her.
It's a Supernatural fan-fic, but it's about her ghost coming back.
I love Supernatural (as you can see), so I thought it would be cool to write an episode-like story about her.

I think I saw something about her on the History Channel.

Think The idea fascinated me. I wasn't particularly . . . I didn't really know what to think of it, except that it was cool that such strange tales really did occur.

She was also related to the ''supposed'' count Dracula.
Cute

I don't believe she was a vampire. I mean the Bathory family did all nice and well, they weren't murderers. Seriously this -just like the Dracula thing- started out as a cute legend but it turned into yet an other thing done just for the sake of attracting tourists. Really, no-one in Hungary-Transylvania would take this seriously.

I've heard of her, and I find her utterly fascinating. The entire idea of a woman doing this in that era also fascinates me.

Does anyone know why she thought bathing in blood would keep her young? Because I'm really dying to know.

Probably has something to do with the blood being the force that keeps an organism alive and all? That's why they thought her a vampire - because blood allegedly gave her the vigor, energy and youth she wanted.

I think she was aneimic so the blood made her feel better because it gave her more iron.

Who was that prince dude who used to put people on spikes to drain their blood and then drank it with bread?

I just looked her up on Wikipedia. It's really interesting what she did, although very....creepy. I had never heard of her before this thread. She really tortured/killed that many people? Wow. That's pretty creepy. Very interesting, though.

Vlad Tepes a.ka. Dracula. Look it up. He was the only one for whom I know that put people on spikes, aside from the Turkish conquerers.

Vlad Dracul.

He was where the idea for the story of Dracula came from.

what do you mean "supposed" ? Dracula was a real person and is considered a hero in Romania and Hungary. Elizabeth Bathory is not a legend either she was a real person and did bathe in young women's blood. Also of course she wasn't the 'I vant to drink your blood' kind of vampire, but technically she did drink the women's blood.

Didn't she take peasant children to train to be "proper" and end up just killing them for their blood?

Peasant children? Oh please, she had more taste than that. She kidnapped the finest of young and elegant girls to drink from. She was the closest any person would ever get to an actual vampire. She had a real thirst for blood. Sometimes she would even bite at some of her victoms.

Of course she is legendary! She's the one of the most popular FEMALE serial killers. What she did was crazy, but it was also a big step for history. If people hear your name and know what you've done then you are legendary.

Dracula was a phoney. A complete fool. I just think people only remember him 'cause he had such a dark and forbidding name. Dracula wasn't a killer, just some poor sap getting wrapped up in accusations.
