At my school, they begin teaching kids Spanish in Kindergarden. They take it all the way up until the end of eighth grade. After that, you can either continue with Spanish, or take up French, Latin, or Chinese instead. You need at least three years of foreign language in high school to graduate.

(My school goes from Kindergarden until High school, just in case you were wondering.)

I really do think that is a good idea to teach languages from kindergarten on. It helps kids prepare for classes that they will have to take later on!
& I know for a fact that I'm going to try to teach my children a foreign language before they go to school. & Then, they'll probabaly go to one of the immersion schools in Milwaukee. I always wanted to go to one of those... they do normal classes in English, and then one of my cousins went to a school where they taught history and math and science, I beileve, in German. There's about three of them I think...
I'm gonna look those up now. haha

I learned some Spanish in Kindergarten up to maybe 4th grade(I really can't remember), I was in Catholic school at the time. The Spanish wasn't enough to get me through living in Mexico, but I still remember some of it. I wish at my high school they taught us something other than Spanish since that is all we have to learn.

We learned a little bit of French from about p3 on. (age 6+)
Around twice a week a French woman would come in and teach us.

In the school I'min now, we have to study French and have the choice of Latin, Spanish, Italian and Irish as well which is quite good.

In my school, you start learning a language in ninth grade. You have a choice between French and Spanish, and you're only required to take two years of it, I believe.

I hate my school's system. I really wish that we could've been required to be taught a language early on. After all, it's much easier to pick up a language as a child, and it would make everyone a bit more intelligent (something that is very much needed at my school).

I also wish that we could have more of a choice of languages, instead of just two...but we're a poor, shitty school in a small town in a small state, so that's not gonna happen. >.<

oh, and I was also wondering one other thing- what other kinds ways do Europeans use to learn languages?

They start learning other languages way before we do I've noticed. Some of my friends from Germany said they began learning English in grade school, so that's probably why they're so fluent in the languages they learn in school. Most places here don't start until middle school or high school.

I'm not sure about the rest of Europe, but when I lived in Turkey, you began learning French in 4th grade

I'm taking French but the language that I really want to learn isn't offered. I'm just hoping to be able to take an online course or something for it.

Here in Austria you start to learn English in Kindergarten and the basic in elementary school. When you are entering 5th grade you start with grammar and all this stuff. In my old school you were able to start with Latin in grade 7th (it was amazing) and when you entered grade 9 you had to take French, it was compulsory. It varies from school to school cuz some offer Spanish and Italian, some Russian and French. But languages are really important here.
You have to take your last exams in my school (A-Levels) in German, French, English, Booking and Accountancy, Ecology and one subject you could choose.

I know in Switzerland they learn french in elementary school and start with English later but that's just logical since Switzerland has 3 official languages (German, French, Italian)

I reckon it's really important to do languages. I'm taking A2 French and German (the second one doesn't really count being german and all but meh).
It's important to make an effort and learn another language especially if you're going to visit that country.
I'm so glad I learnt English when I was five, that's the only reason why it's good now. Same thing with Dutch.

Well, yes, Europeans tend to learn more foreign languages than Americans, but that's not exactly because Europeans consider education more important. It's just that so many countries being in a smaller space, knowing a generous number of languages is always a large plus on a CV.
My sister worked in America as a student, and people were surprised to know she spoke 4-5 languages besides her own native one. But, then again, back in Europe, it's useful, especially if you wanna work, say, in a multinational company.
I can only both speak and write English and French and speak Spanish, but I'm trying to learn German. Well, at least I used to, but it all went to the dumpster. I hated it.

I've taken French for the past 6 years and one of those years was compulsory.
I think people should because other countries take the time to learn our language.

Here, if you don't have a language 11, you're screwed and can't get into just about any college, but it's weird since they don't offer any language you would use here. I mean, sure Spanish and French are nice to know, but what is the point when the population of both is minuscule in the region? It would be efficient to teach Mandarin and Punjabi instead, at least here...

~

I started French in the grade 2, Changed schools and started again in Grade four. Switched schools again, and started again in Grade 5. Curriculums changed, so I started again in Grade 6. Changed schools, started French yet again. Did year 2 of French of grade 8. and then dropped French all together to go to Spanish for grades 9/10/11.

So I've done first year French 5 times D:

In England [I say England because I'm not sure about Wales & Scotland] you have to learn a modern foreign language, and at my school, they make us do our GCSEs early, so we learn from year 7 to 9, and you can drop it in year 10. But you can still carry on if you want to, like I have, to start A-Levels.

I think everyone in my year who dropped their languages is rather stupid File

Learning languages is very important to me. In my school we study French, Spanish and Latin, but I'm also learning German, Serbian and Russian. Well, I'm trying to, anyway.

I know that in my state in Australia, it's compulsory to learn a language in grades 7 and 8. Whether you continue it or not is up to you.

It's the same in the UK but you learn languages until gcse's...

It isn't compulsory any more; most schools allow you drop languages after year 9.
Which is a shame, because languages are becoming less and less popular at GCSE and A-Level.
I think there will be about 4 people in my A2 Spanish come September.

I'm originally from Germany, and it was required that you take a foreign language every year. You start to take English classes in 3rd Grade and 4th Grade- then you can choose which one you wish to continue with. Here in Amerika, they just started teaching Spanish to Elementary Students last year, and Middle School students this year. I'm starting High School in two days, and normally you don't take a foreign language until 10th Grade, but if you have a strong English Language background (this is the way it's phrased in the book- I would say grade) you can take a foreign language in 9th Grade. At my school they only offer Spanish, French and Latin, but at the other High School in my city they offer German.

I live in Quebec, and it's the law that you have to learn a specific hour of French a week. File
I've been learning it my whole life, and I still can't speak it fluently.

In my elementary/middle school, we learned french from kindergarten until eighth. Now I'm in high school and I'm taking french, just because that the only language I've ever really been taught...

Except, at my high school, you can only learn french or spanish.

My dad, the rancher, had to take French in his population-of-300 town school in elementary...weird. When I was in Preschool, they made us learn Spanish colors and numbers from one to ten. Then in fourth grade, we had to take a semester of Spanish, and you need at least two years of foreign language to graduate distinguished, but they ONLY HAVE SPANISH. That is so unfair (even though I would take it over French any day), and to top it all off, it's just a blow-off class. Anything I want to learn, I have to learn on my own time because all the work they give us is word searches about things in a grocery store! Still, I might even make a career of Spanish if I learn enough.
