I don't think I'll be able to take a full year, but I plan on spending at least a month or two somewhere abroad teaching kids English and arts.
I'd love to go to South America, but anywhere is fine, really.

So, any thoughts?

Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 17627 | August 6th, 2008 at 01:37am I am unsure, part of me really wants to leave, like now. I want to go straight to uni in the biggest city I can get into- preferably Canberra or Sydney.
But then I always wanted to take a gap year, my ideal wouldbe to stay where I am for 6months and work (now that I have a decent job) and then go over to London to live/work for 6 months before going to Uni, but I don't think I could afford it.
If I don't go overseas I think I'll go straight to Uni because I can't stay here! |

But yeah, I would take one. Considering that when I graduate, i'll only be 18, and I probably won't know exactly what I want to do in life yet. Better to give myself an extra few months or year to figure it all out. Plus, it might end up being my only chance to travel! Different places I visit might inpact my proffesion. |

I'm quarter Polish and I'd like to go to Poland to get in touch with my polish roots. I'd like to visit the village/town where my grandpa was born and any major places he went during the course of his life, especially towns that he was in during the war etc. I'd also like to see Auschwitz, just because of it's history etc.
Then I'd like to go to Australia to find my uncle. I've never met him and my dad hasn't seen him in 45 years. He left when my dad was 8 and hasn't spoken to my dad since. I'd just like to find him just so I know him. It's like there's this whole side of me I don't know. I'd so some work there and stuff ... I think it would be intresting.

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 476 | August 14th, 2008 at 09:33pm Well, I've always thought of it, doing some volunteer work, then trying to go to university somewhere good, like the UK or the US, but I dunno, I don't think I could keep up with the pressure of waiting a whole year and then getting my life back on track. I need the safeness of three or four years during which I know what will be happening. I would be expecting something the whole time.
Plus, how do I tell my family "You know, I was thinking, what if I took a year off before college?"? They would immediately think I'm not going to college and not give me a break until I accepted going on time.
Not to mention that after that gap year, I'd be almost 21. I want to get my life started. And that means done schooling to me, for some reason. |

Over here in the UK you can do what's called a deferred entry where you apply and all that milarky and you make sure you have the grades to get in and that you've got a place but you just defer it till the following year....that might satisfy your parents, if they would otherwise think you weren't going. |

Age: 12 Gender: Female Posts: 1371 | August 15th, 2008 at 01:04pm Taking a gap year would be hard, though.
You'll be used to the not-doing-anything-all-day routine you have when there's no school.
It's also hard to catch up.
And your friends that were in your year are now a year ahead of you, and you won't get to see them as much. |

I'm younger than everyone in my grade by almost a year, most of them, so I figure, I've got a year to do bugger all so I can be even with those guys
I plan to work for half the year, get some money, do bugger all, and travel for the other half. Go back to my families' roots and all the cliche junk |

The thing to bear in mind is that you can also take a gap year after graduating instead of before. |
