It gives the mother extra protein, which she then passes onto the babies so they don't -this an insensitive way of saying it- drop like flies. It ensures the babies are strong enough to survive.

I buried her in our backyard. I was so sad because her babies didn't have the chance of seeing the world, and how beautiful it is.
