Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 361 | July 4th, 2008 at 05:55am I would love to work at Hot Topic.
But the closet is like...45 minutes away.
The past few times I've been in there, the same employees are there, and they are so nice.

And there's this one guy that works there.
He's pretty cute.

In Ashville, NC
the people who work at Hot Topic are the nicest people I have ever met.
They didn't spester you about buying and they didn't ignore you.
They talked to you about music, what shirt you want, and concerts.
It was pretty amazing.

I was one of the normal people in my store. Kids would drag their parents in and be all "See not everyone who works here is a goth!" And it just so happened I was wearing A LOT of pink that day. And it helps that I'm black. |

It depends on the area cause the 18+ is the one cloest to me and well loads of people come in on a daily baises and well they have to deal with a lot of people and then 16+ one is in an area that is sorta dusty not a lot of people shop there due to the fact that more people wear um Holister and Ambercomie...It also depend on the store its self. |

Age: 20 Gender: Female Posts: 351 | July 18th, 2008 at 01:35pm Most retail will only hire older people or workers with experience. I know a lot of mall stores want you to be over 18, but even if you didn't have to be, they probably wouldn't hire you unless you'd worked at a couple of other retail places, as they can afford to be more selective with who they hire.
I know in my city a lot of highschoolers want to work in Sanity (a CD store), but they won't take you unless you have good retail experience, so you have to work a year or two in, say, a department store first. Stores in the mall also prefer older people because they're more likely to be able to do full-time hours. Even college and uni students can be more flexible than someone who can only work weekends. |

I think it would be cool to work there, but I think I'm allergic to the store, so I couldn't D: |

Allergic how? I know I would be allergic to the trends in there. But I'm assuming you mean it's really dusty or something? |

They weren't working afficiently, and were over all immature.

Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 71 | July 23rd, 2008 at 12:40am The minimum age requirement depends on the mall that the Hot Topic's in. Where I live it's 16. It's not a requirement to have piercings or tattoos, it may just make you feel like you fit in more since most employees have them, but again you don't have to.
I applied to the Hot Topic near me, but they are always swamped with other applicants. The way they look for new employees is through experience. I may have a job starting in the next round of hirings starting in October. I'm crossing my fingers. |

...That probably wasn't the only reason they upped the starting age, though. They might have wanted mature workers for number of reasons- work experience (with references to prove you can be relied on), prospective management, better understanding of business, salesmanship, more available hours, etc. When stores can afford to be picky with who they hire, it's usually the applicants with less qualifications who get cut first. Perhaps a higher age limit was just a faster method of ruling the majority of those people out.
Hot Topic probably realises that a lot of teenagers want to work there just because they like the shop, which, although it isn't a bad thing, loses out against hiring people who might be looking for a more permanent career, prospective managers or people who already have an understanding of how stock is ordered and visual merchandising works, etc. Hiring a skilled staff can do a lot for a business' productivity, and older people are simply more likely to have those skills. |

I also heard somewhere that you have to have a piercing or tattoo to work there as well.
Thats not true.
Half the people at the Hot Topic I go to wouldn't be working there then. |

whoa, seriously?
that's crazy.
well, i suppose what some of you said were right about the age depending on the location; you all probably don't care, but I live in reno, and our mall is near the downtown area.
they probably want someone who won't have to worry about their schooling schedule and such.
thank you all for your input. |

Age: 20 Gender: Female Posts: 98 | October 24th, 2008 at 01:39am I used to work at Hot Topic. I was 19 when I started, but I overheard a young boy talking to the manager, and I believe she said you could turn in an application at age 16 (I guess since that is the legal age in the States where you can work without parental consent).
On the flipside, you have to carry and climb a ladder to plexy and hang some of the merchandise, so it does make sense if the rule is age 18+ or they dont' hire you until you are 18. |
