People must find it odd that Britain still has a monarchy. We must look quite awfully old-fashioned, but I don't care. To an extent I'm glad we have it, even though I'm not very patriotic, because it is a part of our history and shouldn't just be thrown away. An argument used by many people is 'it sets us apart'. Another reason for keeping the monarchy would be tourism. Probably more Americans have visited Buckingham Palace in the past year than anywhere else in the country, so the Royal family bring in a huge amount of revenue from tourism. So the Queen does something in that respect. Of course, her role in politics is negligible and she doesn't run the country, but as one of the symbols of our nation she has a function. Her main role is purely symbolic. In any case, where would the tabloids be if they didn't have the Royals to gossip about? I can't imagine. |

Make it into a hotel for fuck sake. Anyways she costs way to much to keep (and gets in the way of good telly on x-mass) I think we should sell the whole monarchy to another country.....highest bidder wins. See that could be a money spinner! |

I think that Britain having a monarchy gives them a sense of pride and it sets them apart from the rest. It gives the Commonwealth a sense of coming together as countries. It also gives the smaller countries of the Commonwealth (such as New Zealand) identity and it gives the government a figure head to look up to. The Queen doesn't just sit there and look pretty in all her expensive diamonds and what-not; without her many different political and everyday activities would not go through. Haha. If we didn't have a British monarchy, there would be no extra long weekend to celebrate their birthday. |

I think our world would be better off ruled by people born, raised, educated to rule, people who are respected and have blood relation with other country rulers. It makes sense to me. Today's ''democratic'' republics are but a popularity contest. |
| Bloodraine Fanfic Fanatic Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 1329 | The System Maintains: No. There are hundreds of thousands of hotels in London; do you really think it would impact the tourist industry so dramatically if there was one more? It's not a viable suggestion. Besides, Buckingham Palace is already open for tours, in case you didn't already know that. The monarchy is probably one of Britain's best tourist assets. And the cost of keeping the monarchy per person equates to the price of two pints of milk. I don't believe that that is too much to ask. |
| The System Maintains Cliché Catastrophe Age: 16 Gender: Female Posts: 358 | Hey if it was a palace yeah, all the others are like poser next to it. There's many royalty freaks out there who'd eat this up. Y'know all the being better and ruling over everyone, royal experience like. I think might have when someone brought it up in a ran of mine before...... But anyways but you can go all over and we could open up all their old houses, there gotta be a few right? I really think we need to be branching out from all this The monarchy business, it's played out, all we get is elderly Japanese couples we need big family's of fat Americans! We'll have to play of our history 'cos we've got nothing else so how's about doing up all of the country to fit our best stereo types, like all cockney east with eels and pies 'n' mash only jobs available with be for work men (like it ain't already), the west will be depopulate apart from a few lonely men 60 dogs and about 5 women, anywhere past Birmingham ham will have enforced black flat cap wearing and hotpots weekly, the midlands shall revert back to the 80's concrete mass it was and in Scotland no person should be seen with out some kinda tarten on. And Wales with be wear all the hotel cottages are since it's cheap there and all the sheep from the UK shall be moved there as to keep up with the image. Ohhh as for north Ireland it shall be giving back unless it turns out to have oil in witch case we call bagsse. I'm working on the plan for the city as we speak, I don't know much but I know it will involve everyone either being a taxi-driver or mini cabing. And if I get the time I'll do a few big cites there own. See my plan could stop Britain from going into a big recession like America by separating us from it. Don't see The Queen coming up with any ace plans like that now do you? As for the cost of keeping them there is a lot of hidden costs (worse and a cheap holiday and flight) and I like we could up the job seekers for them to have a bit more and get them to do......we ever she dose. But incapacity benefit would have to be tightened up since we know the royals would try and get on it after. I think I remeber fighting with you back on GSB about the war or something........long time ago. Back then my sense of humour was lacking, but hey it was different, being war and all. ....=] |

She can declare war, she can command everyone out of the country apart from her Corgies if she wants. But she's given command to the government. Unfortunate as it sounds, she's really just a big tourist attraction though. We have the democratic system to run the country and she's there with all the power, sitting away the years in her palace. But without her, we'd lose a lot of our main income: tourism. We haven't got a nice history really, especially in other countries' eyes (we basically moved in saying we're having this country thanks. That's my house, you can go somewhere else for a while. Kthxbai). But seeing as there are hardly any countries left with monarchies, it's one of the only things we have. To be honest I feel sorry for the Princes. Their job is to sit around and wait for their own mum to die, as sad as that sounds. Which is why I'm in support of them doing things other than sitting in Buckingham Palace all their lives... |

I mean as a non british I can tell you all we get about her is parades and that it. Politically? geez any monarchy related article goes to gossip!! If they take out the red phone booths they should take out the queen |
| Bloodraine Fanfic Fanatic Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 1329 | Kevin.: Actually, the Queen's political power is virtually zero. When a Prime Minister goes to ask the Queen for permission to form a Government, that is simply historical tradtition. And when a bill recieves Royal Assent, that is also just a formality. In theory, she can probably still do some things, but in practice, it's unlikely to happen. |
| Bruce Wayne. Writer's Block Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 4 | I think the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family are an important part of British society and history. What we mustn't forget is that she's also the queen for other countries too. Of course she has a use. The Queen is a symbolism and of course she does things. She go to events, she meets people, she gives MBE/CBE/OBE's. Sure, she may get paid a bit too much, but she's OUR QUEEN. She is a tourist attraction, sure. But what about the charity work she does/did. I know the rest of the Royal Family certainly do Charity Work anyway. And as for Prince Harry, he was in Afganistan not that long ago, if I remember. |
