I felt like a preschooler holding a camera for the first time.
But getting there, and need to have another look at the manual.
One mistake I won't again, and holy hell is this gonna make me look stupid, but the first time I used my DSLR, I accidently held my hand in front of the flash.
Never doing that shit again. Lol, don't worry, I did that the other day. I need to get the side shoulder thing, because at the moment I hold onto the lens.

I agree with Sara, another thing I tried is to put it on the Lanscape feature and choose a setting from there, especially if the stage lights are extremely bright. Just something I found when at a few shows.  |

Okay, but how do you adjust the ISO/ASA? On my camera I go onto the menu, choose ISO and it only says auto. [/stupid] |

On mine, I was in S mode [shutter priority], and I couldn't change the ISO either, but then I changed it to fast mode, I could change it.
K, reading up on your camera, you have a Scene Mode, which you can "bump to ISO to 1000"
Another quote that seems to contradict my last quote "Control over the ISO setting is only available in program auto mode."

It seems on mine that I can only adjust it on the program auto mode. But thats ok because I can try and recreate the landscape settings on the program auto. I don't have a fast setting on my camera. |

Does anybody have some information I should know before going into the course? Thanks. I'm not sure where you're from so I don't know what your course will be like, but I took/am taking photography for a GCSE and what we have to do is create a 'work journal'. We have to choose a subject, I'm doing plants and landscapes, and we have to go out and take photos of our subject, print out the contact sheet and comment on it, and we have to find influences and photograph in response to their photography. Then you develop on your ideas and experimant a bit until you produce a set of photographs as your final piece. It involves a lot of your spare time. You have to do two work journals and at the end we have a 10 hour exam spread over a week (five days). I'm only doing one project because I'm incoprerating it with my fine art GCSE because I don't want to have to fit 20 hours of exams into one week (so I have one photography project, one fine art project and I can do the exam in whichever I choose.). Yours might be completely different, but that's a taster of what I have to do.
Question; For large professional cameras, i.e. not a compact one, who makes them best: Canon, Nikon or Sony? |

There are a lot more than just those three, there are Olympus [but they are crap, stay away], Pentax and a bunch of others. and there is no diffante winner. I perfer my Pentax K10D over a Canon or Nikon anyday.

"The Best Camera" Thanks :} Yeah DSLR, changable lenses. I know there's more than those, but I've been looking at a few particular models by those three (can't name them exactly without looking it up, I know one of them is the 450 or 400D Canon EOS). I think I'll look up some Pentax's though as you said yours is nice. I'm just trying to find the best for my money, I like things with a long battery life and I know some brands can really suck at that type of thing, a fast shutter speed is also exremely handy for me.
& I have an Olympus already, it's not that smart but better than a compact, and I don't really like it that much. I prefer my Fujifilm compact over it, even though the price difference is like £100. |

And my baby doesn't just sit on a shelf. He's abused more than I would like, but he has a weather proof [read: he can get wet, just not go underwater] coating so I feel rather safe dropping him.
Pentax just released the K20D, so if you could find the k10d for 600$ish, but the k20d has live view and 14.3mp. [if you're into that kind of thing, (the k10d has 10.2mp fyi)]

Yeah, price does have a factor over what it provides and how it can perform. You're good with this stuff XD. I looked up the Pentax K20D but it's just too expensive. I can't really go over the £500 mark and it's like £899, or £619 at it's cheapest. I looked at the K10D and that one looks pretty good plus it's only £460, the K100D also looks quite nifty.
I looked at the following cameras, and I'm not sure which one I'm most likely to get. Price is important as is value, image quality is also needed to be high.
Pentax K10D
Pentax K100D
Canon EOS 400D
Olympus E-420
Nikon D40x
Sony Alpha A200
Which one looks best? I'm leaning towards the Sony, Pentax K100D or Canon. My dad has the Canon EOS 350D and I know that's quite good in terms of what I'm looking for, but he's so protective of it I've only been able to touch it a few times, so I'm more likely to get the Canon more than anything else. The Nikon is what I'm least likely to buy.
Anywho, anyone fiddled around with any SLR's by any of those makes before, or, even better, taken photos with/have any of those exact models (besides Sara, who has one of the Pentax's)? |

I have been looking around on the internet, reading choice reviews and such and I have been to a couple of camera shops where I live. Next week my dad is taking me to like the best camera shop where I live. It often has camera's like $100 under the price they are being sold in other places.
Basically I need your recomendations?
Or even what not to get.
Anything, please.

Nikon's are okay but I'd choose my dad's Canon over the Nikons I've used any day, but it's mainly because when the shutter goes to take the photo it's a bit weird and sometimes you think you've taken a photo when you haven't and vice versa. With Olymus's I've never used an slr but their smaller camera's aren't as good, in my opinion. I mean they take good enough photos and the quality is good but they lack behind when it comes to shutter speed and battery life. Doesn't mean to say their big ones aren't good though. Fujifilm make really good compacts, and I've only used one of their DSLR's and it's pretty good, but I personally prefer to use Canons. They're a lot more professional than a Fujifilm, and they have weird lenses.
Most of that is just from experience using those makes, and I'm still waiting for a camera whizz to tell me if I should steer clear of any of the cameras I posted in my post above yours XD. But I hope helped a little bit o.O |

If you go out for the day to take a lot of photos, so you'd be using the camera a lot, the battery usually dies before the end of the day, even if it's fully charged at the begining of the day  . I'm still mostly pro-Canon |

Now, I have an idea, and despite the fact that I'm undoubtably ugly, I think it could work. Though I was wondering how (or if) I could set my camera to take a picture every 5 seconds, you know. Like a continuous stream of photos and I just try to keep on moving. Or do I need a tripod to do that...?
Okay, I'm majorly confused....
But yeah, and if you have any good ideas for a self-portrait you can throw them my way too...
Edit: I also forgot to mention that I have to do a project on my favorite modern photographer. Now, I have a lot of people I can think of but none of them are really that famous. So I was just wondering if any of you could give me a few sugesstions. Thanks!
