Jack the Ripper is an alias given to an unidentified serial killer (or killers) active in the largely impoverished Whitechapel area and adjacent districts of London, England in the autumn of 1888. The name is taken from a letter sent to the London Central News Agency by someone claiming to be the murderer.

The victims were women allegedly earning income as prostitutes. The murders were perpetrated in public or semi-public places at night or in the early morning. The victim's throat was cut, after which the body was mutilated. Theories suggest the victims were first strangled in order to silence them, which also explained the reported lack of blood at the crime scenes. The removal of internal organs from three of the victims led some officials at the time of the murders to propose that the killer possessed anatomical or surgical knowledge.

Newspapers, whose circulation had been growing during this era, bestowed widespread and enduring notoriety on the killer owing to the savagery of the attacks and the failure of the police to capture the murderer, sometimes missing him at the crime scenes by mere minutes.

Because the killer's identity has never been confirmed, the legends surrounding the murders have become a combination of genuine historical research, folklore and pseudohistory. Over the years, many authors, historians, and amateur detectives have proposed theories regarding the identity (or identities) of the killer and his victims.

Over the past few months, I've become fasinated with the Jack The Ripper story. It's just so... creepy and macabre.

Is anyone else interested in this man and his knack for killing people? Do you think it was one person, or possibly gang activity? What do you think his motives were?

Discuss?

I think that he/she/them are really interesting to read about, and the fact that they never figured out who they were makes it even cooler, in a weird way.
I think that it was just the one person, honest.

I think he was one sick dude, but one nonetheless.
and have you ever seen a picture of the girl Mary Kelly that he totally dismembered?
My friend did a research paper on him, and we saw this gross picture on one of her sources of Mary after Jack destroyed her, and I couldn't sleep for a week.

And as far as motives go, I think killing women probably turned him on times two. Like, I think he may have just been aroused by blood and guts and such. Gross, but so is what he did.

Yeah, EveryManHasAMolly, I kinda agree with you on his motive. I watched a Telly program about him one day, and they said that sexual reasons where one of his supposed motives. I also heard that he slept with the women before he killed them.

Totally sick.

I find this man so interesting!

But, he does sicken me. I know he did it for research and all, but he could've done what the famous grave diggers (can't mind their names), done at the beginning of their 'career' and get dead bodies.

He shouldn't have gotten prostitutes and killed them just to find out about the body.
But still, he's interesting. File

Wait, so he might have been studying the victims anatomy?

Wow..

I just hope that wasn't his only motive. I mean, it doesn't matter what his motive was, it's still disgusting, but just to look at the person's anatomy?

Makes me glad to have cadevers. =/

Ha-ha.
I don't know if that was the only reason, but, I know it was the main reason. He was known as a doctor before the whole thing happened I think.
Unless I'm getting mixed upShifty.
But yes, he did it mainly for the human anatomy.

I find him extremely interesting. He did a sick, sick thing though.
No matter what, killing someone is wrong, but how he did it with no one ever finding out who he was is just overally bizarre to me.

Has anyone ever watched the movie From Hell?

Jack the Ripper is one of my many strange obsessions/fascinations.
He was so sick but just so interesting at the same time.
Any ideas or thoughts on who he really was?

They think that he was one of a few people.
An American dude, called Frances something or other, but I don't think that it's a very convincing case. Just because he was a quack doctor that carried out illegal abortions etc and had a weird collection of wombs kept on a shelf. He emigrted back home after the murders stopped.
And they think that he might have been a Polish Jew called M. Druitt. They think this purely because Druitt killed himself as his mom and the police were convinced that he was the killer.
There was another dude that they think did it because he poisoned his three ex wives before getting committed or something like that.

There are too many theory's. I don't know what to believe really, non of the suspects seem too believable in my opinion. They don't seem completely true to the Ripper theme. I don't have a particular suspect, but I like the idea of a couple of people I don't like the look of, you know what I mean?

I admire him, in my own twisted little way. You know? I hope you do anyway, but yeah. He's just amazing, and one of the best things to have come from my country if you ask me. Smile
