| Skitty; impaled. Cliché Catastrophe Age: 16 Gender: Male Posts: 670 | M I K E Y ! ! !: |I'm sorry, but you're very much misinformed. Emo is a music genre. Emo FASHION came from emo music. And more to the point, bands like My Chemical Romance, and everything else the media classifies as emo are not emo. So before you make a statement, do your research first. |

It started in the eighties, from the D.C music scene. Emotive, screamo, indie-emo, they're all sub-sub genres, relating to emo xD in some way. That's how my music appreciation teacher explained it to me. Emo is a genre, it just includes a lot of different sub-genres. I love Rites Of Spring, Dag Nasty, Dashboard Confessional...it's all good. |
| adalia-x Cliché Catastrophe Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 371 | I dislike the emo label. These days a lot of the time a band being called emo is being directed as an insult. Which I think is why a lot of bands will say no when asked if they are an "emo" band. They don't like to be classified or labelled. Personally, I love the genre of music |
| Freddie Mercury. Grammar Guru Age: 68 Gender: Male Posts: 5551 | Se7en: I agree. Emo came about it the eighties, and the emo fashion came about a few years back. There are bands that are self-professed emo's, too. It isn't just a fashion. |

| bert. Cliché Catastrophe Age: 18 Gender: Female Posts: 654 | i'm not even sure what the emo genre is all about to be quite honest, because there are so many different explanations to it. like, is it just music involving feelings? because if it is, then all music is "emo". god, i even hate using the word "emo" because it seems that everyone has something negative to say about it. >_> could someone please explain me the term "emo", so i could be sure of what i'm actually discussing? ![]() |
| hobo homicide. Amateur Author Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 149 | Yes. Someone please help me out here too. Cause I could have sworn 'emo' was a fashion trend. |
| CemetaryGates Writer's Block Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 29 | Personally I think the word is ridiculous and I prefer to refer to it as "scence" Just because Emo stands for emotinal accordingly this is because it's short for emotinal. And it's not fair to label it as emotional. Because most music in every genre is Emotional in some way or another. |
| hobo homicide. Amateur Author Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 149 | CemetaryGates: But isn't scene another form of 'emo'? According to Urban Dictionary it is, But just in a 'I'm cooler than you' type of way. |
| I'mNotListening Amateur Author Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 161 | One_liners: In my opinion, emo (emotive hardcore) music sucks; it's generally whiny and has weak guitarring (as in uncreative riffs, etc.) so I don't like it when my favorite bands are labelled as emo. Like My Chemical Romance, you can't say they're emo, because if you listen to say, The Promise Ring, and then listen to MCR, you're not gonna find very many similarities. So maybe others are like me and they don't like emo. Thus, they don't appreciate their favorite bands being called emo, when they're really not. Rock and metal are wider genres, which is why people don't find it a problem when bands are labeled as such. Like rock, it describes classic rock, punk rock, alternative rock, country rock, everything so if you say like, The Used are rock, that could be true. And there are different forms of metal; death metal, heavy metal, blah, blah...same thing. But emo (the "original" emo not the really random generalization used today) is a sub-genre of hardcore punk and later, indie. That's really narrow, as music genres go. And to people who are saying emo is not a music genre, you're wrong. It started around the 80s and it wasn't until like...2000 something that the emo "fashion" came about. I don't know why the emo genre and the emo style have been given the same name. Some emo bands: Rites Of Spring The Promise Ring Indian Summer Fugazi Embrace Moss Icon Texas Is the Reason |
| Shardell2007 Writer's Block Age: 19 Gender: Female Posts: 7 | DancingInObscurity:To tell you the truth, before I grew familiar with the term "emo" I thought that that meant that the person was a suicidal person who was addicted to eyeliner, but when I became friends with some people who were labeled "emO' I found out that that was a stupid stereotype that I had before, My friends weren't suicidal, they were just representing their styles... I also found out that it was a music genre, and I'm a big fan of it. |

| purplerawr Writer's Block Age: 15 Gender: Female Posts: 64 | I don't like it when bands that have emotion in their songs are classed as 'emo' Infact, I down right hate it. It's just as bad as being called 'emo' for listening to that music. I just listen to whatever I want, I don't care if people think of it being 'emo' because that's just pathetic. |
| I'mNotListening Amateur Author Age: 14 Gender: Female Posts: 161 | purplerawr: In some way, every band has emotion in their songs. Even if it's a shallow, stupid emotion, it's still an emotion. So if emo meant emotional, every single person on this planet and every single band on this planet would be emo. But only the ones who wear black, hoard eyeliner, and use dark metaphors are called emo. So, it has nothing to do with emotions, it has more to do with the way they look. Which is absolutely absurd because the real emo had nothing to do with any of those things. Blah, it's just like punk. It lost all its meaning. |
| Alexithymia. Cliché Catastrophe Age: 67 Gender: Female Posts: 620 | I think when the beginnings of the punk genre started branching out, emo was considered as a viable one, yet one that ultimately has not much to do with what everyone is calling it today. I agree with a lot of others on here, I myself do not see it as a genre anymore, but more of a use for slander. Emo is now an insult. It's used to degrade someone, and that's something I am completely against. I don't think I've heard emo used as a positive term in the last two years. One other thing that I don't agree with is AFI being labelled as emo. There roots are in punk/hardcore. Yes, they have changed as most bands do, but considering they have been around for almost 20 years I don't think anyone would be impressed if they just kept releasing material like 'Yurf Rendernmein' for every album. They were here long before any of this started up. They grew, like ever other band has. I class them as Alternative Rock but there are probably more branches they fit. Same along with My Chem, The Used, Alkaline Trio, and so on. To me isn't emo isn't a genre, and if in this day and age is a band is calling themselves emo they are just making morons out of themselves. And considering those who do, mostly do so as a joke. Even the bands are taking the complete piss out ot it. |
| Filistata Cliché Catastrophe Age: 17 Gender: Female Posts: 496 | Honestly, if someone were to ask me if any of the bands I liked were emo, I would say I don't know. But apparently Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday are emo bands, and I friggen' love them. So whatever. Music is music. If it's classified as "emo," I don't give a rat's ass. The important thing is that I like it. ![]() edit: I got to agree with Alexithymia, though. I mean, I can never tell if a band is "emo" or not, 'cause I just don't see it as a genre anymore, to be honest. But again, whatever. People could easily argue with that. |
