Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot

Bonfire night, a tradition that has been carried out since 1605 to celebrate the fact that Guido Fawkes was captured for treason and therefore James I was not assassinated.

Anyone disagree or agree with this tradition?

I personally like this tradition, I enjoy going down the my local park and have a huge bonfire with fireworks and food etc.
But I also think that this tradition has lost it's historical context since some people don't really know why we do it. So I feel it could be promoted more as a historical event rather than an event where children get excited to hold sparklers and watch pretty fireworks.

I don't even know why we celebrate this. I mean, the fireworks and toffee side to things is really nice, as are the bonfires themselves, but I don't know who ever decided to make a celebration out of it.

Do people still burn effigies of Guy Fawkes anymore? I always found that weird. It's basically the sacrificial burning of a terrorist. Well, I know he was just the guy who hung around to light the fuse, but still.

Everyone was encouraged to celebrate the fact that James I survived, and it sort of stuck.
I've never burnt an effigy of Guy Fawkes.
I love how Fawkes gets all the credit for the plot, having a day named after him and all, I mean if I contributed to the treason and someone else got all the fame I would be pretty jealous. Laughing

But yeah, I think it's pretty cool.

I hate it.

I really really do.

But I hate fireworks in general. So any holiday condoning the use of them is evil.

I'm sort of stuck on the fence with the whole Guy Fawkes and Parliament.
I mean, treachery, asassination...all that jazz.

Sure, it's cool that James I wasn't killed and that Fawkes was caught.
That's ace.

IThe problem with it is:
There's a Catholic primary school in my city, St Mary's, and they have the fireworks and stuff on the Friday.
And it bothers me that Catholics celebrate what a fellow Catholic attempted to do.
It just seems rather contradictory, if you know what I mean?

Other than that.
Fireworks: cool.

I'm comforting my pets.

I like how V For Vendetta wishes to remember it. A holiday to remember the power ideas have.

yeah, but it shouldn't be about him at all, really.

he didn't even support it, he was just employed to light the fuses.

^ But if you think about it, that is quite important. Isn't it also why we put Guy Fawkes' on bonfires?

He was a supporter, and yes other people were involved but since he was caught lighting the fuse he was seen more of a traitor (to the King) than the other conspirators. Also some saw he him as the leader of the conspiracy.

It shouldn't just be about him but for some reason, probably due to documentation he is the one we name it after.

I had to do an essay in Year 8 about whether or not he might have been framed for the gunpowder plot. There's a theory that the governement needed a scapegoat and so they set him up.

I always thought we were celebrating the fact that he nearly killed the king when I was little.

I was totally up for it.

I don't like it so much knowing that we're celebrating a guy being caught and killed by the government. And I don't like fireworks. And the boys where I live like to shoot them at girls in the streets late October through to January.

Hmm, interesting theory, there.

Fireworks are pointless. I despise the things.

If I wanted to watch pretty lights in the sky then I'd go alien hunting.
