Philosophy has for quite some time be a very important aspect of cultures around the world. The names of renowned philosophers have cemented their place in textbooks around the world, and their ideas and principles are scrutinized and inspected in search of enlightenment and new meaning. Great philosophers used rational thinking to examine the world around them in great detail and develop methods and ideas to shape daily life. Philosophy is typically divided into branches consisting of ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and logics. The definition of philosophy is controversial, and various sources claim it is different things. Some say philosophy should not be based on "leaps of faith", but rational thinking, while at the same time others feel faith is one of the most significant parts of philosophy. Different yet, others feel that philosophy is seperate from both empirical science and religion. Some say philosophy only discusses the process of inquiry, while others believe it is much broader than that. Popular Philosophical Theories Dualism - The philosophy that the human mind is nonphysical, and that our material state is seperate from our mental; they exist dually.(hence the name) René Descartes is the philosopher typically associated with dualism, however Aristotle and Plato both held similar beliefs on the mind as well. Reliabilism - The philosophy that something is only considered knowledge if the information is gained by reliable processes. A true belief is only knowledge if there is a high ratio of true to false beliefs. This theory was coined by Alvin Ira Goldman, a professor of philosophy. Internalism and externalism - Two of the more popular modern day philosophies, internalism and externalism are typically discussed with morals. Moral internalism states that morals or judgments are necessarily connected to our actions to follow morals or judgments. On the opposing side, a moral externalist beliefs that there is no necessary connection between the morals we hold, and the actions we commit, and that external factors are connected to our actions. Self-realizationism.- This philosophy states that in order to do good and be content in life, one must act in accordance with nature, and then they will realize their full potential. Another belief of this philosophy is that at birth, a baby is not a person, but a "potential" person, to grow into a person it is necessary to realize potential. Aristotle was the philosopher behind this theory, and he believed that unhappiness was relative to unrecognized potential in a person. Feel free to bring any other philosophies or philosophers into the discussion, that was just a starting list. Potential Questions for Discussion.. 1.) What do you believe the definition of philosophy is? 2.) What philosophies do you choose to live your life by? 3.) Do you believe that philosophies were meant to adapt to changing times, or that a good philosophy will hold true infinitely? 4.) What is the difference between philosophy and religion, if you believe one exists? 5.) What errors do you see in any particular philosophy? 6.) Do you believe any philosophies should be treated as fact? 7.) Do historical philosophers and philosophies still have importance in modern times? |
| Mitchell. Member Age: 15 Gender: Female Points: 100 | I don't truly understand philosophy but I find it fascinating. Philosophy brings many unique ways of looking at the world , In my opinion. I have quite a few philosophies that I thought up about existence and reality , but according to my friends I'm just being stupid. I personally think that religion is written facts about things like the world , creation etc. and philosophy is ways of interpreting these facts and applying them to our lives. :cute: |
| robert smith Member Age: 16 Gender: Female Points: 250 | We had to write a thing about our personal philosophies for english, and really it just confused me. Everything about philosophy confuses me. |
| The Lovecraft Member Age: 17 Gender: Female Points: 500 | My personal, much simpler than the official, and much simplified, definition of philosophy is : a point of view upon major issues in life, or life in general. That's basically how I see it. Generally, I live my life by principles led by tolerance, love, acceptance, and enjoyment of the very moment. |
| Uprising. Member Age: 13 Gender: Female Points: 100 | this really confuses me. i just sort of...live, i guess, there's no real idea or structure behind it. |

| Injila Member Age: 15 Gender: Female Points: 100 | 1-The same as yours. 2-Basically the Philosophy and ideas of my religion. If we're talking about modern day philosophers then Allama Iqbal 3-Good philosophy is universal. 4-For me they are one and the same thing. My religion has certain ideas, rules, and regulations that one is to live life by. And then we have the Prophet as a role model. The rules, ethics, morals and ideas are universal and for all times. 5-Certain philosophies center themselves on one point, that sort of kills imagination:) 6-Yes, if the ideas are commendable and true, and if science supports it then yes. 7-Modern day philosophies are also somewhat influenced or atleast affected by philosophies of old:) They are kind of important because they are mostly general rules that still apply. |
| Charade You Are Member Age: 15 Gender: Female Points: 100 | 1. The study of, practice of, and search into questions/issues/ideas regarding morals, ethics, the meaning of life, knowledge, and general life-based ideas (I'm sorry, I didn't read yours and merely skipped over the list of philosophies; I learned a bit from that, actually.) 2. I can't say I choose to live my life by any one particular philosophy. Rather, I live by many small ideas (many of which are based off of a few ideas or philosophies) that nowadays seem to be changing more often and evolving into what will ultimately define how I live my life. 3. Certain philosophies? Well, they probably have evolved over time, but they often stay pretty loyal to the philosophy that was originally created by that one philosopher. Philosophy itself? That has definitely changed over time. Philosophies are often molded by society's current trends at that time, religion (religion that's prominent at that time, definitely), etc. There is no "good philosophy". A philosophy that was capable of existing over time is a successful philosophy, yes. It's difficult to say that one philosophy has and always will be true. 4. There is a large difference. Religion is based off of myth and story that tries to accurately portray how we became and why. Philosophy does not use story, but is what one (or society) believes. For me, (I'm sorry if I offend anyone with this) religion is simply philosophy with unnecessary components (deities and religious myth included). 5. Well, there are things I disagree with in many different philosophies; I can't particularly say. 6. Considering how many philosophies (we even be able to include informal ones) there are, I highly doubt that could be possible. There are far too many beliefs and ideas for any to be treated as so. They're obviously treated as fact by those who believe in them. That's as much as they can, and maybe even should, be. 7. Definitely. Most modern-day philosophies are based ancient ones. Ancient philosophers have impacted society in many ways. Without a doubt. Well...yes. I'm sorry. I'm very tired. I'm not sure if this makes sense. |
