What's Up With The Whole Gay Thing?
Ok so what's up with the whole gay thing?
If you don't know what I mean, I'm talking about "the its not right to say gay in any other definition" thing.
Like if there was a ugly shirt or something & you didn't like it & you said "that shirts gay" I don't know something like that.
Well its "not right" to use "gay" like that any more.
So I have a few questions:
Since when? (Seriously I wanna know when it became such a big deal.)
Do you think "gay" shouldn't be used like that?
Do you think its ok?
Personally, I use it that way all the time.
Like: "Dude you're so gay." you know stuff like that.
I'm not sure if its wrong anymore or what but I still use it that way.
When I use it though I use it to describe something girly or whatever.
Oh also if everyone has a problem with it why is it still ok for guys to use it that way?
I noticed that in another journal & I believe someone pointed it out.
I'm not gona say who not that's its bad just wondering.
So I really wanna know your thoughts on this because its been bugging me.
You think people should stop using gay to discribe things?
Should we just get over ourselfs & talk how we want?
What's with the double standards?
When did this become a problem?
I wanna know so answer.
P.S. I don't wanna get any hate comments on how I use the word "gay" ill still use it. Old habbits die hard. Also I say stuff like that all the time I'll admit I'm a little racist but not homophobic believe me! Yeah I'm a little racist, so what I admit it I think everyone is a little.

I once saw a commercial saying not to call stuff gay. I don't know. So gay people and lesbians can go around calling each other fags and dykes and all that, but if straight people call something gay then it's bad?
It's like black people and the N word. I'm actually scared to say the N word even though I'm half black.

How are you "apparently" bisexual?
>.<
Insanity's Artist, July 8th, 2009 at 11:57:48pm
Well...you could think of it this way: You're a homosexual teenager that is constantly put through crap because being open about it and you're harrassed, and when someone refers to something that is stupid or ugly as "gay," you're bound to be offended.
I think so, anyway. But hey, why would my theories be considered worth anything?
It's kind of like why do we find the "N" word so horrible, or the derrogatory slangs that are aimed towards women, men, Mexicans, Blacks, Whites, Asians, ect., ect.?

If the word "gay" used to mean "happy," then how did it end up being a slang word for homosexual?

I always use the word gay to describe something happy. Dunno, my English teacher used to say it a lot.

I don't know I never found it as an insult but I never really take things to the heart most the times. I'm pretty sure I still like girls even if I don't get mad for saying somethings "gay" or whatever I'm just chill & don't freak out.
Maybe it is insulting but I don't really pay attention to it.

ketamine Haha me and my friend tried saying "That's so straight," but since we are straight, it didn't stick.
But she and I live by this: GINASFS. Look it up if you don't know.
But it is an insult to gay people. That's why I stopped saying it. A gay friend got mad at me for it.

When you say "That's so gay," sometimes...it really is gay. And then it's awkward.

Good point....

I guess it could be considered an insult to gay people, because you're using the word that they identify themselves with, to describe something that you find laughable or stupid. I have no idea how that use of the word developed, though; it may have been through anti-homosexual means, since people also say, "That's so homo," which quite clearly derives from "homosexual," and "gay" is therefore synonymous with "homo."
I dunno, I don't use it, just because I have gay friends who don't like me using it, but I'm not really gonna attack someone if they say it. It's pretty common slang, after all.
Bast, July 8th, 2009 at 10:47:37pm
I use it & I'm "Bi" apartently... (dont ask)
I don't know though.
Also is it bad to say "homo" if so what if its just slang for "homosexual"? I though "homosexual" was the proper term? But "Homo" isn't? Hummm Just thoughts...
Neche_Girl8, July 8th, 2009 at 10:40:31pm
I don't see the problem. I mean, it's just become a use of the word. It's not being used in a homophobic way, nor is it meant to mean "that thing = bad" therefore "homosexuality = bad". It's just become one of those words that has several different meanings that are not connected to each other. It's slang, and doesn't need to be the literal meaning.
I have friends who are gay, and they say things like "that's so gay" all the time.

I get offened when people say "That's so gay.", mostly because I am gay. It's also incorect grammar. The deffinition of Gay is happy or homosexaul, using it as "That's so gay." Doesn't make much sense, a shirt can't be homosexual, and your not calling it happy.
I prefer "That's so straight." -shrugs-
