Question about a potential storyline

I was thinking about a story I have in mind. There's a big plot line in it that has to do with rape. It wouldn't be a stockholm syndrome kind of thing. In fact the person would not even know who their rapist was at any point in the story. It would happen about a third of the way into the story.

Are people honestly interested in reading a storyline where the person is raped and has to deal with it in a depressing and self destructive way?

I've been thinking of this story for a long time, and I've done a lot of research on it. I myself, however, have not been through such an ordeal, and I don't want to insult anyone who has been by writing a bad story.

It would be in first person. Do you think the only people who can write that kind of story are people who have had to experience something that horrific? I'm not sure. I was thinking about writing a miniseries to kind of figure out my style before writing it.

Also, if the rape victim never found out who her rapist was in the story, would anyone still want to read it or would the rapist have to be someone the victim knows and can remember?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
