Social Identity Theory - Rant.
I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I am beginning to get really pissed off with loads of journals about stereotypes. Yeah, I'm sure, it will pretty much annoy you and bug you for life.
But you can't actually completely stamp out prejudice. It would be physically impossible. Not everyone will stop calling you names or discriminating against you.
A stereotype is a simplified and/or standardized conception or image with specific meaning, often held in common by people about another group. A stereotype can be a conventional and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image, based on the assumption that there are attributes that members of the other group hold in common.
If anyone does pyschology then they may know of a guy called Henri Tajfel. He studied social psychology. He did research and experiments on stereotypes. He came up with the Social Identity Theory.
Social identity theory suggests that people identify with groups in such a way as to maximize postive distinctiveness; groups offer both identity and self-esteem. The theory of social identity has had a very substantial impact on many areas of social psychology, including group dynamics, intergroup relations, prejudice and stereotyping, and organizational psychology.
This, in basic terms means that the only reason why we stereotype against other people it because it makes us feel good. It raises our self esteem.
If we didn't have steotypes, we'd probably all be a bunch of depressed little moaners whinging about ourselves and how we hate how we look.
Why do you think all the popular people are popular? Because they feel good because their insulting us. And if we insult them, it makes us feel good.
If you don't agree with me, send as much hate crap as you like. It would probably make you feel better.
