The daughters of Gem

Because I remember

"You're going to need to throw that away."
"Come on, it's historical."
"It's crawling with bacteria. It's gross."
"It's my grandmother's."
"It's invested."
Kate Lyn was holding a dusty glass full of a mysterious substance, "Do you even know what this is?" she held it close to my face trying to show it's value (which to me wasn't a lot).
"Do you even know what it is?" I said in a know-it-all voice.
"As a matter of fact I do. This, well I'm pretty sure this is a type of spice." She returned the voice right back.
"Like the one you bought at the store?"
"Maybe, only one way to find out." She took the bottle and knocked it against the sidewalk.
We had driven to the local Burger Home and sat on the sidewalk to enjoy our food. Well I did, she order a shake I hadn't really seen her sip but only a few times.
Kate Lyn began to cough incessantly, "Whoa Kate Lyn. Chill." I took the jar from her hands and smelled a pungent odor, "Holy crap! What is that?"
"It's flesh or something."
I dropped the jar and scooted back, "Gross! Why would you're grandmother have that!?" I asked in utter disgust.
"There are many possibilities."
"Like what? That's immoral." I snapped.
"You're enjoying that burger pretty well. That's flesh too."
"Good point." I threw the burger a distance away from me, "Fuck the burger. But still I'm eating it for nutrients; I'm not keeping it in a jar."
Kate Lyn picked up the book inside the box, "It says it was used to save someone."
"Let me see."
The small journal was old and the handwriting was written in beautiful calligraphy.
"Kate Lyn who are the Crystals?"
"What do you mean?" I showed her the front page, "Oh. My grandmother wasn't the only witch. She had 4 other friends."
"Tabitha, Libby, Gretchen and Madison?"
"Yeah, yeah how'd you know?"
"I saw it in the book."
She furrowed her eyebrows together, "Well yes, they were known as the crystals because they all wore necklaces with a certain gem. They say that the gem held there power-"
"And did it?" I asked with anticipation.
"Not really. It was ways of not letting the magic seduce them into using excessively."
"How?"
"Curious today are we?" she beamed "Well I guess they put some of their magic into the gem. Like putting leftover food in the fridge for when you get hungry later."
"Could you put all of the magic into the gem?"
"Not all."
I thought back to my memory or vision (or whatever) and began to wonder why taking the necklace off took such a toll on them. Maybe they didn't die when they gave the girl their necklaces. I began to wonder why if there were five gems, I only saw 4.
A familiar feeling began to creep up on me once again. The hairs on my neck stood on end and my lungs felt like they had disappeared; making it impossibly to catch one last breathe before I went into total vision memory hell. The orange sky that covered our part of Arizona began to swirl and my head became dizzy, my breath completely stop as well as my heartbeat. The walls began to darken and I stepped back into the room of screens showing me the past.
"We must leave!"
"Ferdinand, I can't. My sisters-"
"You're sisters shall understand, do please come with me. We'll get married and live a normal life."
"We are both monsters, we of all people are the least likely to have a normal life." The girl looked so young and clean. Like a porcelain doll. Her eyes were glossy and full of power. The crystal around her neck was an emerald, the same color as her eyes.
"Kate Lyn please. I love you."
She looked taken back, as if this was something he had never said before. "I love you too but-"
"THEN we shall leave tonight. Try to convince you're sisters to come. Spain isn't safe anymore for you and you're sisters." He grasped her hands and put them to his chest, his vein pulsing red blood instead of blue "They'll come for you."
"I shall try but please don't look for me if I do not come to you."
The screens began to fade as I stepped back into reality.
I looked down and saw the journal stilling sitting in my lap.
I glanced through the pages of it, "Kate Lyn?"
"Do witches die?"
"What?"
"Can witches die?"
"Well obviously."
"No I mean, from old age."
"They say they can't because they magic keeps them alive and young but it's not true. My grandma is-"
"What were the gems like? Garnet, aquamarine, sapphire and coal?"
"Coal isn't a gem."
"But the last one, Gretchen she used dark magic and that's why her eyes were as black as night."
"Madison you're delusional."
"Madison?"
"I mean Aspen!" she tried to cover up. "We've been tossing names around a lot, I got mixed up."
"What happens to witches when they die? They don't really die do they?"
"They say they get reincarnated. They come back as someone else." She answered.
"And they remember their past, right?" I was holding onto Kate Lyn's shoulders giving her little shakes.
"They say-"
"Who says? The books in the fucking box? You're grandmother? Or you?!" The words shot out of my mouth like a bullet from a barrel.
"You're crazy!"
"Am I? What was you're grandmother's name?!"
"I-I"
"It was Kate Lyn, it was always Kate Lyn. She was the fifth gem, YOU WERE THE FIFTH GEM!"
"H-h-h-how did you know?"
"Because I remember."
