Tornadoes in Toronto

I can honestly say that I never thought that a tornado would seriously land around here, it doesn't make sense to me. Aren't they not supposed to be able to land when the ground isn't flat, or well that's what I heard.
Today, this exact night, there was a couple tornadoes that landed, and one person is said to be dead, houses roofs torn off, power down, trees fallen.
I feel bad to say this but I'm kind of glad that it didn't land anywhere too close to me, and that worst that happened was a small flood in my brothers basement bedroom, and a couple of my mothers flowers killed, is that bad?
I feel horrible for the people that now need to get new houses, new cars, for the people who watched it happen right in front of them, it hurts thinking about it, yet I'm ecstatic that no one in my family got hurt.
