WOW I MUST BE VERY STUPID!

okie dokie.....i'm not the brightest bulb out there, so can someone PLEASE tell me how to create a freaking awesome profile layout? literally, jealousy drips down my chin when i look at your profiles XD. to me it's really confusing; i go get a code from a cool layout and them paste it in. then i go to my profile to see how it looks, but only the background image shows and nothing else. you can't even scroll down the page. it's like it's frozen. the page design doesn't show either....so what do i do? i'll love you forever if you help.
