Book recommendations please?

Hi there. (:
For christmas my friend gave me a £15 book voucher and I am yet to spend it. Tonight I am going to use it and order some online, so the question is

What books shall I buy?

I have enough for about two books. I like authors like Douglas Coupland, JD Salinger, Philip K Dick, Truman Capote, Stephen King, Ben Dolnick, Richard Ford ect.
But really I'll read pretty much anything and I'm open to all suggestions!

I've heard Neil Gaiman is good, but where should I start if I'm going to get a book by him? My friend also highly recommended Trudi Canavan to me (I think 'The Magicians Guild' is the first one) so if anybody on mibba has read it I'd love to hear what you thought.

Please don't just write the authors name and title, I'd like to know what the book is about and why I should read it.
