GC600 - Sunday Wrap

Day three of the Gold Coast 600 was a very controversial race as officials black flagged many drivers for kerb abuse but the controversy did not yeild a spectuclar finish between Whincup and Winterbottom.

Twenty eight drivers and their international co-stars hit the streets of Surfers Paradise again today and with Jamie Whincup leading the championship again the battle was on with teammate Craig Lowndes. However, coming down to the wire Whincup would find himself battling a very hungry Mark Winterbottom for 1st place.

The circuit is brutual but not as brutual as the officials who were dishing out black flags all day with much critisim. In the drivers briefing it was agreed that only two wheels could go over the kerbs at the backend chicane. Some drivers were not listening, many were calling for, international, Boris Said to be penalised for kerb abuse though the penatly did not come. Darren Turner the most controversial to be black flagged.

After Saturday, Will Davison and his partner in crime Mika Salo were feeling pretty good about Sunday's chances however a punctured tyre ruined opportunity for a good finish. The best word to describe the race would be chaos and Jason Bright was innocently wiped out after the WesTrac car was signalled for a safe spin to go the right way.

It was a $20,000 pay day for Whincup after securing two pole position for a bonus $10,000 and his international superstar Sebastein Bourdais given the Dan Wheldon Trophy, which he recieved very emotionally. Tonight, the drivers can salute goodbye to a great driver and salute goodbye to the Gold Coast for another year.
