Australia... I am so disappointed in us all.

As of Saturday, Tony Abbott became the 29th Prime Minister of Australia.

Like many politically-minded Australians, I watched the election results rolling in on ABC, and whilst I wasn't particularly surprised, I still burst in to hysterical tears at the announcement.

Why is this, you ask?
Well, curious foreigner, here are some of the things that Tony Abbott, the Prime Minister of this country, has ACTUALLY SAID IN THE ACTUAL PUBLIC SPHERE ACTUALLY EVER.

"Jesus knew that there was a place for everything and it’s not necessarily everyone’s place to come to Australia.” - on refugees

"What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing is that if they get it done commercially it’s going to go up in price and their own power bills when they switch the iron on are going to go up.” - on women and the impact of Australia's ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

"There may not be a great job for them but whatever there is, they just have to do it, and if it’s picking up rubbish around the community, it just has to be done.” - on Australia's Aboriginal people, the oldest and proudest culture in the world with links to the continent going back 40 000 years who have been royally screwed over by British colonisation (excuse the pun) and paternalistic policies, had their children stolen from them and now live in abject poverty

"I believe that there is a vast moral gulf which separates modern Australia from Nazi Germany. But can we be so sure that, under pressure over time, we will not slide down the same slippery slope. We only have to look at the abortion situation in this country." - comparing the pro-choice movement to the Holocaust

"Abortion is the easy way out. It’s hardly surprising that people should choose the most convenient exit from awkward situations." - just no

"It would be folly to expect that women would ever approach equal representation in a large number of areas simply because their aptitudes, their abilities and interests are different for physiological reasons." - this man has three daughters and a wife that's all I'm saying on this before I punch something

"We just can’t stop people from being homeless if that’s their choice."

.........

JUST STOP. HOW IN THE NAME OF SWEET GOLIATH'S CHILD DID THIS MAN ACHIEVE A MAJORITY GOVERNMENT. HE HAS NO ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY, HE IS A RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC, BIGOTED, CHAUVINISTIC PIG AND I AM BEYOND ANGRY.

I am so ashamed to be a citizen of this country right now. That the people here value money and material goods (Abbott advocates less tax for the rich and more power to large corporations) over the welfare of our society, their civil rights and the welfare of the environment that my children will be forced to grow up in makes me sick. My children will not be allowed the right to abortion or euthanasia, my gay friends will not be allowed the right to marriage and equal rights and opportunities. As a woman and the daughter of a 1970s feminist who fought for my equal right to work, the glass ceiling just got that much thicker.

Sorry, but f*** this. I'm moving to Canada.
