Well, do you live close to the beach? The if not, that makes sense.
Single sex volleyball isn't bad, just way more competitive for guys I'm sure haha
The trick for girls to absorb the hits are to get right under the ball so it hits your forearms and to not swing. Since guys hit really hard and you swing, most chances are that the ball will go out or hit the ceiling if you're playing in doors.
