Hm. Well, people are usually [i]way[/i] more confident online. They can say their true feelings freely without really worrying about repercussions. So he meant what he said, but - if he has a girlfriend - it might not be wise to bring up anything. Especially if it wouldn't last, what with you going off to college. (Congrats, btw!)
