Gerard Way,

GERARD WAY

A husband, a friend, a father, a hero, the lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance,
Gerard Way. His band, his voice, and his lyrics have changed the life of many, and saved the lives of some.

People going through depression and periods of self harm have looked to this band to try to find a way out. The songs “I’m not okay” and “Famous Last Words” are the songs most people say have saved them. I’ve read many people’s stories about how Gerard and My Chemical Romance has saved and changed their lives.

Some of these stories included the following:

“My mother was a drug addict and my only friend got hit by my drunk grandmother’s car and was killed instantly, and I witnessed the whole thing.”

“My life couldn’t get any worse or any better, and so I wrote a note explaining why I was going to kill myself, and went to say goodbye to my family in my own way, and heard the song “Famous Last Words” and it was the first time I’d ever heard it. I’m still alive.”

Gerard Arthur Way was born April 9, 1977 in Belleville, NJ, the first son to Donna, and Donald Way. Three years later, they had another son, Michael James Way, or Mikey. Gerard worked as an illustrator for Cartoon Network in 2001, he was on his way to work, and saw the plane crash into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. He was never the same after that day, he didn’t come out of his apartment for a while.

He decided during the time he spent alone, that he wanted to do something bigger with his life. He wanted to be someone more than who he was, he wanted to make something of his life. Later that year, he got his closest friends, Ray, Matt, and his younger brother Mikey, and made a band. Mikey came up with the band name, My Chemical Romance, when he saw a book named “Three Tales of Chemical Romance,” by Irvine Welsh, while working in Barnes and Noble.

None of them knew how much their music would touch people’s lives.

Later, their drummer Matt, left the group. They got their friend from The Used, Bob, to be his replacement. They also later brought in Frank, to be a backup guitarist.

Gerard Way, has recently recovered from an addiction to drugs and alcohol. As of August 2004, Gerard is sober. He also visits a therapist when he is not on tour with his band.

Gerard’s friends and band mates pulled him out of depression twice (before the band really started.) Most of the people who know this story of Gerard Way, are inspired, some people have quit drinking just to follow his example. His fans support his sober decision 100%. One concert Gerard was drinking a Redbull in a cup, and it looked like beer, and he got yelled at by the people in the crowd, like “What are you drinking? What are you thinking?”
The Way brothers grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, is the one who taught young Gerard to draw, sing, and perform. Elena was the biggest inspiration to Gerard. Elena died of cancer in 2003. Gerard took this harder than anyone in his family. He and his brother Mikey, wrote “Helena” as their way of coping.

He’s changed my life to, not saved it, but changed it forever. I’ve been through some majorly tough times as well, even though My Chemical Romance didn’t exist when I was younger, they still helped. The past year for me has been extremely hard, with family problems, and I had to move from all my friends. Gerard Way and his lyrics, have helped tremendously. Whenever I felt like I just basically wanted to punch someone square in the face, MCR cooled me down. Whenever I felt like I just wanted to be left alone, I listened to MCR. I wouldn’t be who I am without Gerard Way, I definitely would not be that pleasant to be around either.

In conclusion, Gerard Way, has changed many lives including my own, and saved many lives as well. Some people don’t think they’d be able to go on with their lives if Gerard hadn’t made this band. Others think they wouldn’t be the same. Me, I definitely wouldn’t be the same, and if I don’t get my daily dosing of MCR I’m not very happy.

In the words of My Chemical Romace,

“I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone.”

I wrote this last year for class.
We were supposed to write about someone who has impacted many lives, my mind automatically went to MCR.
I got a 100% and the closest grade to me in the entire school was an 87%.
So I beasted.
We also had to present this verbally in front of our classmates meeting a time limit of 5 minutes.
Mine was 4:45. [:
Because I'm hardcore.
