The Mockingbird

The mockingbird I am--
I’m the innocence of man
I’ve done not what’s been accused of me,
But no one believes
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I’m the voice that goes unheard
The color of my skin,
Speaks louder then my words
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I’ve the respect of no decent man
I do not deserve it, they say,
Then they spit, turn, and walk away
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I’m trapped in a cage
The lock is strong;
There ain’t no getting out
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I dream to be free
The sky above, the earth beneath my feet.
Sun hot on my skin, the wind cool
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I received no justice
The lies became truth
The mockingbird I am.

The mockingbird I am--
I was gunned down
Running to be free,
The mockingbird I was.

The mockingbird I was--
I bled the same color of blood
The mockingbird I was.

The mockingbird I was--
I was the wronged
The mockingbird I was.

The mockingbird I was--
I was the face,
I was the voice,
I was the truth.
The mockingbird I was.

The mockingbird I was--
I was the innocence of man
I'd done not what was accused of me
But no one believed
The mockingbird I was.
