The Truth

I look at you and wonder,
What I ever did to deserve you.
Your blue eyes bore into mine,
& I find myself at a loss for words.
For whenever you’re around,
My defenses melt down like butter in heat.

Even though you’re long gone,
I feel you everywhere.
When I close my eyes,
I see your face, your eyes, and your lips,
When I lay my head against the pillow,
I envision you there, next to me;
Holding me, protecting me.

Our lives used to be intertwined,
Our love used to be strong and powerful,
We swore no one would break us apart,
But we never realized the threat was us,
That sometimes;
Love just doesn’t last.

Tears are streaming down both of our faces,
We need to accept the obvious;
The truth that is so hard to bear.
Our hearts are aching for one another,
Our arms long to be around each other,
We went our separate ways,
But we were never happy with it.

The truth we never accepted,
The lies we told,
The pain we felt inside,
All of it could’ve been avoided,
If we hadn’t said those three sacred words.

I miss you, babe.
