What is it You Fear?

Hush little baby,
Please go to sleep.
Why must you tremble?
It's no use to weep,
whenever I'm near,
so please dry your tears,
and tell me,
what is it you fear?

The "doctor" is in,
the lights have gone out.
Try as you might,
no one hears you shout
as a needle plunges deep into your skin;
your stricken face shows me the fear within.

Now hush little baby,
Please don't you weep,
soon you'll be in an eternal sleep.
As the sirens grow near,
and the pain fades away,
I whisper in your ear,
"Now tell me,
what is it you fear?"
