Loyal Dog

I used to live on a cloud
Detached from the world below
No emotions for the general crowd
No real happiness, but no sorrow

I saw the world in black and white
Not even a shade of gray
Everything was cut and clear
There was nothing more to say

Then he came along
With his pastels and his hues
And I tumbled headlong
Into the humanity I’d long refused

I fell head over heels
And straight into his arms
He showed me world filled with life
Because it was touched with a little harm

He said the beauty of life is that it ends
Love is fleeting but oh so sweet
No one knows what’s around the bend
The next good or trial they shall meet

I fell so helplessly in love
With his charming dreaming ways
I followed him like a loyal dog
Yearning to be graced by his gaze

I carried his world on my shoulders
I took all his pain into my heart
Opened doors and moved boulders
Just to play a supporting part

I like to think I was taken for granted
Or maybe he just didn’t need me
He pushed away from my tight embrace
For he only lived to fly free

He would leave me at home to go roam
Chasing the sun until the moon rose
He’d asked me to care, now he left me alone
My only companion were my lonely woes

I fell hard into myself
Retreated into my own mind
Went crazy with unrequited love
So broken, blue, and blind

I took my own life
And now this sack of skin and bones
Is all that remains
Of the loyal dog he’d once known
