What You'll Never Understand

She stared at the mixture
of reds and greens and blues
ugly
she called it.
Browns, grays and a weird purple
came from the mixture
ugly
she called it.

She didn't understand how the colors
made such an
ugly
mixture of other colors.

She stared at the child
squinty red eyes and white skin
ugly
she called him.
No hair, no tan, normal
this child was not
ugly
she called him.

She didn't understand how God
made such an
ugly
person to enter the world.

She stared at the city
crumbled buildings and homes on fire
ugly
she called it.
No people, no peace, just death
came from the ruins of the city
ugly
she called it.

She didn't understand how people
made such an
ugly
city from a once beautiful paradise.

She stared at the world
from her place high above the clouds
ugly
she called them.
They cut and shot, raped and killed
on the earth under her clouds
ugly
she called them.

She didn't understand.
But how could she,
when no one else could?
