Friends Close, Enemies Closer

She offers me a smile
Sickly sweet and fake
I can see it behind her eyes
All the underlying hate

All the contempt that she holds
For me and me alone
Fear mixed in somewhere
But she wouldn’t let it show

We walk down the halls
Looking like best friends
People clear a pathway
They know how it will end

We sit together at lunch
I talk pointlessly in her ear
Though I know there’s no need
She doesn’t listen or hear

I don’t know what she’s trying
If she wants recognition or fame
Is it the power she craves?
Or just to be associated with my name?

She knows now people fear her
She knows they stay out of her way
She thinks they all respect her
But it’s all a game I help them play

Oh honey, don’t you know I’ve caught on?
Or do you think I’ve bought your act, for sure?
Because I take it all to extremes
Keep my friends close, enemies closer
