Death's Prisoner

“I am life” the rain said unto me,

“Then what am I?” asked I to the rain,

“Pain” came the answering reply.

“I am love” said the burning flame,

“What am I?” asked I to the flame,

“grief” said that of the flame mournfully.

“I am truth” whispered the mirror silently,

“And I?” Asked I,

“Lies” uttered the mirror tragically.

“I am justice” exclaimed the scale excitedly,

“What of me?” asked I dreadfully,

“Fear” boomed he.

“I am freedom” cried the flag in the wind,

“Dare I ask that of me?” asked I afraid,

“A prisoner” said that of the flag grievously.

“I am strength” boomed the food on my plate,

“And I?” whispered I miserably,

“Weakness” said he unto me.

“I am death” snickered the razor in my ear,

“And me?” mouth I fearfully,

“My prey” exclaimed he in contempt.
