Ephemeral

Trapped underneath
Tossed by the undertow
I felt myself sinking,
Beneath the folds
Of an ocean.

I felt its paws
Dragging me deeper
Pulling me down,
Sucking the life away.

Am I alive,
Or am I merely living?
Passing the time,
As the days blur before my eyes.

They meld together,
Innumerable, unintelligible
As they snap back,
And fade into the past.

I felt myself paling,
Collapsing, breaking down
Like the boy Icarus I descend,
Towards the ocean floor.

The persona lifted away,
The self disintegrating
'Or was there ever
Really a true self?'
The words echo boundlessly,
Stirring the silence.

I hit the seafloor
Without a sound.
The light diminishes
As the flame wanes away.

Pathetic, wallowing in desolation
My hand reaches up
Up toward a dimension
Utterly impossible to reach;
The expanse of sky blue
Warped by the tide.

So I fade away,
Retreating into my silent place.
The connection is lost,
Vanishing into emptiness.
