The Chase.

You take a step, then another.
You look left and right,
Watching over your shoulder.
Your eyes widen as you see it coming,
You begin to pick up the pace.
It begins to speed up along with you,
And you shudder as you sense it coming close.
You begin to trot,
It soon follows.
You begin to run and it chases you!

It’s a silly game of call and response,
A ridiculous game of cat and mouse!
Run, run, run!
Run from the dark cloud,
Run from the screeching sound!
You begin to panic as you sense it even closer!
Scream, as though you were in pain!
Hide behind the wall,
Hold your breath and don’t you dare breathe!

Watch it creep passed you,
And slowly let out a breath of relief.
The dark cloud trails behind,
Taking over the already gloomy atmosphere.
It begins to rain, one drop at a time,
But then you realize your eyes are dripping.
But wait! It’s really raining after all?
Maybe you’re not really crazy,
Despite all of this?

For once, you feel safe in this place,
But you want to feel even safer!
You walk to your happiest place,
The roof of the tallest building!
You see sights unlike any other,
And the city looks different in this view.
It looks... Peaceful,
Something you don’t typically experience.
From below, you hear it growling,
Cursing, that it lost you!
You smirk, because you got away,
But you still watch with caution.
You look up to the Heavens,
And you smile,
You remember who’s there,

Who’s watching over you.
You feel so relaxed,
So relaxed that you trust yourself,
To close your eyes.

When you open them,
You hear a noise.
You gasp quietly and turn around.
The angels above hold their breaths.
It snickers,
Because you’re trapped.
Your face contorts to fear,
You begin to shake!
You want to run!
You want to cry out!
As if your superhero will save you!
You whisper softly a hello,
As if you were speaking to a friend.
But this, was no friend.
It laughs, it spits in your face,
And begins to reach for your arm.
You pull away, and take a step back.
You realize you’re at the edge!
You’re at the edge of the building!
You realize that this is your fate!
You grab it by the throat,
And you bring it real close.
Your adrenaline is pumping,
Your eyes stare like daggers,
Into the fire of its eyes.
You planned on killing it,
You planned on ending it!

But what do you hear?
Your superhero!
Your paragon steps between you and it,
And you can’t help but smirk!
You feel safe, as if they’ll save you!
It backs away in fury,
Terrified of what power your love has!
Your darling turns toward you,
Tucks the hair behind your ear,
And gives you a warm smile.
Your face turns a soft pink,
And you smile back.
Your hero giggles,
Your heart leaps in your chest.
You’ve missed that sound so much.
You murmur your thanks,
You bring them real close.
Your darling says they love you,
And slowly leans in for a sweet kiss.

But before you know it!
It returns with a punch to your love’s heart!
You stand there, gaping,
Watching your hero take a beating.
You want to hit back!
You want to murder the beast!
Covered in the purest blood,
Your paragon lays immobile on the ground.
Your stomach drops,
You take a step toward your hero,
But it turns to you with a growl.

You freeze,
You gulp hard as it smirks.
It creeps toward you,
You get goosebumps!
“Let’s finish this,” you mutter,
Pulling it close to you,
You slowly fall backward!
You watch the Heavens move further away,
Your hero screaming your name!
They watch with horror written on their face!
But it plays an evil trick!
It vanishes from your grip like dust,
But not without its evil cackle.

Before you could think anymore,
Before you could shed a tear,
You were gone.
That, was the last period in your story.
But you didn’t have to worry anymore.
The chase is over,
Your heart was broken.
But the paranoia,
The pain,
The never-ending guilt,
The things that drove you insane,
They don’t matter.
You were gone.
Nothing mattered anymore.
