To Be Anyone

What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
Who would I become under this hat of hopeless dreams?
My hat of imagination.
I’ll let my heart run wild.

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
Tall and slender,
Entangled in the ribbon, the hoop, the music.
Flawless grace - a raindrop floating from the sky,
The grace of a swan, breaking the surface of the water.

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
Short and light,
Chiseling the unforgiving ice with every glide,
Watching the world through a dizzying lens.
Feet smacking concrete,
Jumping off anticipating the flight.
Water closing in fast, millimeter precision, no splash.
Gold medals heavy with pride,
“Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave?”

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
Sweating blood, sweating love.
More Gatorade to power me up,
Last name printed on the back of my shirt.
Catching balls, stitches on gloves,
Engagements with the end zone,
Helmet kisses, butt smacks.

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
Cameras flashing, heels clacking,
Critics are scribbling, beauty emanating.
Radiating envy.
Cocooned on the couch, only fingers peeking out,
Scrambling across the keyboard, shouting, “Thoughts, wait up!”
Black, peppered on white,
Millions of copies sold.

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
Weeks of preparation, candles burning late into the night.
Starbucks come morning, no playing around.
“Objection, your honor”, argue back and forth.
Shuffling papers, gavel slams down,
A resounding silence-
The Plaintiff has won.

Who would I become if I could be anyone?
I’ll cling to this last dream, follow it relentlessly.
Trust in the heavens,
Believe that it’s my purpose.

So this was for my writing class, and for the assignment we wore hats. Under the hat we could become anyone we wanted to be, and the writing prompt was to write about that.
