A Tree of Polar Opposites

Summer nights
Of years long past
With memories
That will always last

Remembering back
When you and me
Discovered the gnarled, old
Oaken tree

We climbed and swung
From the twisted tree
We were so young
And so carefree

We'd meet beneath it
Every day
Just you and I
It felt best that way

We made it our castle
We crafted a swing
We would climb to the sky
We did so many things

As years soon passed
Our visits would be
Less and less frequent
Beneath that old oaken tree

But the nights that we met
Neath the gnarled limbs so high
Were the nights when we'd just talk
And we'd gaze at the sky

We'd lie there in silence
With your head on my chest
We'd just love the other's company
And I loved those nights the best

Sometimes during the day
I'd push you high on our swing
Made so many years before
Out of tire and string

Those were the days
With just you and me
But now it's my first time in a long time
Standing underneath our tree

So many years have gone by
So much has changed
And this old oaken tree
Has never looked more strange

My eyes scan the branches
As the memories recall
How the gnarled twisted branches
Had looked in the fall

A tree of polar opposites
A tear's just escaped my eye
Recalling the swing rocking gently on the right
Your lifeless body hanging from the other side

There's flowers growing underneath the tree
Right where we buried you
It just felt right to lay you there
Since the tree was all we knew

Rocking softly on the swing
One tear makes way for another
A tree of opposites; life on one side
With death lying on the other

A breeze is ruffling through my hair
Warm wind gently pushes me
And I could almost swear that I
Could feel you right by me
So gently swinging me
Underneath the old, oaken tree

This was heavily influenced by a post on tumblr. There are always two sides to things. There's the carefree, happy side, and there's the depressing side. It's up to you to decide which "side of the tree" you want to be on.
