True Colors (Sonnet on Melissa)

I am not who I am,
For who I am is not me...
I'd like to say it's not just a sham,
But rather, I'm a cast of what society portrays me to be.

I'm not scary or mean,
Nor a juvenile delinquent,
I'm just the way I'm seen.
My TRUE self is very different.

I'm creative, I like art.
And my favorite color may be black,
But that shouldn't set me apart
From my peers and make me subject for attack.

Really, all I'm looking for is a friend,
But I guess it's true that broken friendships can never really mend.
