The Soldier's Last Breath

Alone, cold and desolate
Carried upon lonely, whispering winds
A voice from one in a damaged state
Growing more intense as the air it does rend.

Shivering with fear as it halucinates
Flying across the desert sky
Cringing in shadows as for death it waits
Searching for one to console and reply.

Crying for an end to life’s cruel torment
Searching for a way to rectify
All of the wrongs and trial it underwent.
Searching once more. the soul to purify.

Eyes growing vacant and stained,
Body growing cold and stiff,
Voice mumbling, “This could not have been in vain.”
Trying to eliminate the “what-ifs.”

Mother

The white light growing ever brighter,
Tunnel trailing behind.
“God help me, mother!”
“I wish for everything to rewind!

“I’m sorry for the things I said,”
“And even more for the things I didn’t.”
“I’m going on straight ahead.”
“I love you.. This was always evident.”

Love

“Don’t you cry for me.”
“I know it will be hard.”
“To me you will always have the key.”
“Be strong, my dear, I’ll always be in your heart.”

Comrades

“My brothers and sisters in arms,”
“Thanks is owed to you for standing by my side.”
“For all of your strength, wit and charms,”
“You were always my friends and guides.”

God

“Now I see it… Drawing near…”
“Do you love me, do you care?
“Can I live my final moments without fear?”
“Can we end this long and tiresome affair?”

“Are we there?”
“Are we through?”
“I went through life unaware,”
“And now, I’m making my peace with you.”

“It’s been so long and hard,”
“This weary road.”
“Will you be my guide and guard?”
“Would you please lighten my load?”

“I wish I had done this sooner.”
“This peace is overwhelming.”
“Life before now was a blur,”
“My Savior and King.”

“Take me into your arms,”
“Happy, safe and whole.”
“Now forever safe from harm,”
“Your blood has paid my toll.”

Shuddering and sporadic,
Each one a struggle,
Cutting the soul to the quick,
Labored and befuddled.

Such a grand resignation from war,
Now smiling, he welcomed death.
He drew it once more,
The soldier’s last breath….
