What It Is To Know You

For the winters' worth of a thousand pens
From grand foyers to duplex dens
I've dreamed and slept to dream again
Of what it would be to know you

I crossed my heart and hoped to live
To see the morning light forgive
The night so I could brightly give
A wish, what it is to know you

I packed belongings, one, two, three,
I begged a bargain, bagged my plea,
I blew out candles and asked to see
A world in which I see you

I penned down pages, A, B, C,
I pegged what pieces could let me be
A girl, a woman, or just plain me
But with added eyes to see you

I wrote you letters, I wrote you songs,
I'd hoped you'd know to sing along
I'd hoped it wouldn't be so wrong
To hope you'd want to see me

I dolled up, dressed up, fessed up too
Of all I hoped to feel of you
Until my baby eyes turned blue
And I hoped yours could see me

But you were never on display
And I wore goggles anyway
And with your path a different way
From the one I paved to view you

It's all too clear and all too plain
That I'm too near and you're too vain
And it only took a minute to explain
That it wasn't enchanting I knew you.
