Raksha Bandhan

She tore the hem of her war torn ‘Sari
Pulled out a binding thread carefully
Wrapped it around her brothers hand and wrist
One she for years had adored and kissed.

The battle raged both here and there
The acrid smell of smoke, blood and tear
The fight for freedom worth more than life
Her brother revived stood with sword and knife.

Charging into the tumultuous wave of death
Cutting down all possible with his last breath
As she herself tried to beat back the godless horde
Bound with brother, together their loves accord.

Sadly they did not survive the onslaught
From those that would oppress them without thought
Her blood stained threads now were poured
Into the Gate of the Lord.

Author notes:

The name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests 'a bond of protection'. On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to their sisters to protect them from all harms and troubles and the sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all evil. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima ( full moon of august) which comes generally in the month of August. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters.
