What A Time (To Be Alive)

Why do we downgrade pain?
Push others away?
Why do we laugh at misfortune?
Cackle in the face of torture?

In this world, feelings are -
They’ve become overrated, somehow.
Men can’t even cry or love,
And women can’t speak up,
Because somebody - who? -
Decided they didn’t like it.

When did our human instincts
become undeniable faults?
What’s so wrong with feeling?

When did self harm become
More resourceful than talking?
When did suicide become
The only solution?

Who decided we can’t feel?
Because I’d like to see them
Fall in Love -
Lose a lover -
Fall into Depression -
Face Anxiety -
Lose Hope.

I want the person who decided
Men should never show weakness
To stand up and raise a hand -
Swear to whoever that they’ve
Never felt pain.

Who said women can’t fuck?
Who told us being beaten meant love?
Who turned normality into weakness?

What man or woman made shame
Acceptable,
But said grief and tears are a
Sign of weakness?

What world do we live in,
Where asking for help -
Begging for a reason to live,
Is treated as humor?

Who said fat was ugly,
And skinny was beauty?
Because that’s not how it works -
That’s not how the world should work.

When did a broken heart,
Come to mean indifference?
When did death become
Nothing to mourn?

When did tears become a sin?
And who said seeking attention
Is a bad thing?
Who decided standing by was
Better than taking action?

What a world we live in.
Where men can’t love or
Hurt or cry or mourn;
Where women are treated
like sex toys - Must be perfect,
Unused and unwilling.

What a time to be alive -
Shame everybody wants to die.
