Dragon Days
I drink to dragon days
Dazed and dizzily I down dozens of drafts
Dreaming dreamily of times
When tipsy trolls tumbled tireless out the tavern door
To tip trembling turtles onto their backs
Leaving them open for
Grumbling goblins to gather them up
And gorge themselves greedily on their grilled flesh
And sell the sorry sea shells to slithering snakes
For a sack of silver
Seeing them swirl themselves into circles
Inside and outside the shells to see
Flowery fairies flouncing firtily
Flowing through fields
Flying fancily from fern to forest
Fairies are finicky fae
Following fairies would lead you astray
Goblins and fairies never did get along
Nearby sirens sung seductive songs
Swooning sailors and soldiers sent kisses
Smiling sillily seeing nothing wrong
As the rivers muttered muted under them
Warning the wounded warriors to watch out
The water wasn’t as welcoming as it appeared
And after siren songs lost their sweetness
Sailors and solider were welcome to sleep

As they wrangled with nets
Reeling in the watery dead
The siren prey
Why waste what others want not
When the dead such good spells make
Brownies scurry brown and furry
From bush to burrow in a hurry
Broken boats may not bring them much bounty
But busy witches can’t kill bustling brownies
These are the dragon days
Dirty and dangerous
Kill or be killed
We dragons breathed fire
And sat on our treasure
And humans with swords
We just killed for pleasure
Princess picking was a sport
Princes and knights would come and we’d snort
Bursting them into pyres of flame
Very soon after we’d devour their dame
Those were the dragon days
Long gone and past
I am a dragon the smartest the last
I don’t think any of you remember me
It’s been a while since anyone cowered before me
Your newfangled weapons
Have killed all my brothers
My uncles my aunts my sister
My mother
I’ve been hiding in this mountain
So long and I haven’t seen anyone yet
But don’t think too long on it
You’ll soon forget
