I Can't See

1.
I can't see
This battlefeild is a bloody mess
The man beside me
is missing his head.
I fired out randomly
Into the musky air.
The first time I've
Fired a gun.

2.
I can't see
My God, I hate the water.
I'm up to my ankles in--
Oh, Lord! What was that!?
It hurts--a BULLET.
I've been hit! A bullet!
I reached to my calf
Where the steel was
Lodged.

1.
Oh, damn it.
The first time I shoot a gun
Someone's been hit.
He's screaming right now.
I'm going to hell.
I raised the gun to my head and fired.
I'm dead.

3.
I can't see
Where is he?
I squinted into the dusky air.
Oh, God.
He's been shot.
I barreled past loping men
In uniform, who desperately
Tried to escape.
There he was, lying on the muddy ground
Clutching his calf in pain.

2.
I looked up
He was right near me.
"I'm not gonna make it."
I told him.
He didn't listen.
He knelt down beside me
And pulled off his ragged scarf
And fumbled to tie it about
My wounded leg.

3.
"It's okay."
I told him.
He shook his head.
"You're gonna die with me
If you stay. You want a wife and
kids? Forget me."
"I don't care about a wife and kids."
He said, tying the scarf tighter.
"Right now, its you."

2.
I felt my head get light.
"I'm dying." I told him.
"See you in Hell."

3.
I shook his head
Tears staining his muddy cheeks.
"No, no, no, no!"
I screamed, shaking his lifeless form.
"Don't go! Don't go! Don't go!"

2.
I can't see
