Universality

It's funny how caught up in ourselves we can become
Wasting ages upon ages chasing the ideas of separation
Instead of accepting uniqueness in the same breath as universality.

I'm guilty of it myself, I'm not afraid to admit
I'll read poem after poem and think nothing but
"Well, I can't relate."

I've never lost a parent
I've never lost a romantic love
I've never healed from my own pain.

So what is this to me?
What is this to you?
The answer is in poetry's own universality.

In poetry we all co-exist
By fear, by dream, by love
Poetry is the great equalizer that from which no one escapes.

And what's the trouble with that?
So the next time I read a poem about a broken heart
I'll remember when someone broke mine, though not on a date.

The next time I read about the loss of a parent
I'll remember losing my grandmother
And the weeks my mother was in the hospital for a heart attack.

And the next time I read about someone's healing
I'll think about my dreams
And I'll remember that even when I was little, I did heal from pain.

So you see, there's really no escape
What poetry brings is in everyone
Poetry is eternal graffiti written in the heart of everyone.
