You Again

Like bandaids, we use laughter and kind words and moments with genuine friends to cover our past wounds.
We heal scars by strapping on old sneakers and sweating out sorrows, spontaneously shifting our appearances with the swift cut of long hair, and unforgivingly searching for anything to fuel an adrenaline rush.
We attempt to replace old memories- the ones that we flashback to as we drive home at 1 am, the ones we don't necessarily want to remember.
We try to find new excitement, new flings, new life in the empty space that someone has left behind.
Stitch by stitch, day by day, breakdown by breakdown- we try to overcome heartbreak.
But just as the circle of life includes death, the cycle of healing a broken heart includes set back.
The simple fact is, we can pretend to be healed, to be whole again, so long as our past remains a distant memory.
The unfortunate truth is, it is far easier to lose it all, to let all your progress come crashing down, then it ever was to heal in the first place.
All it took was seeing your face again.
