A Heartbeat

I can often feel my heart beating,
As if it is competing against itself.
Can it make it? Am I watching?
I don’t know, I don’t know.

It is a hummingbird inside my chest,
Fluttering so quickly it is a blur to me.
Sucking up all the sweet things.
Flitting away before I can reach.

I often feel my heart beating,
As if it notices something I do not.
Can it get closer? Am I scared?
I don’t know, I don’t know.

It is a magnifying glass inside my chest.
Focusing on that which I left long ago.
Zooming it in too close for me to see.
Cracking before I get a better look.

I often feel my heart beating,
As if it needs to remind me.
Can I feel it? Am I alive?
I don’t know, I don’t know.
