My father

It must have been a year or two
Since my father was here with us
I remember well how it felt
when he held me and kept me safe.
With his wise words
And his always understanding voice
That could stop a war
between my sister and I.
But then sickness took him
Taking him deep
Deep within its lair
And soon he left us.
He left us to pretend we were okay
But even now tears still come
Our hearts go on unmended
Our pain remains hidden.
Though he can't be here with us
We know he watches us still
Keeping us safe and loved
Filling all our days with hope.
All of his words still ring in our ears
All of his lessons still help us in our days
All of his hugs still wrap around us
All of his love still fills our hearts.
It must have been a year or two
Since my father was here with us.
