I'm From The Earth

I’m from Gypsies.
The most modern of which.
From crammed U-Hauls,
And familiar cardboard
That holds a lifetime of memories,
Of locked away dreams,
And lost faces in the sea of time

I’m from the Earth.
From the Lone Star.
From “Yes, ma’am”
And “No, sir”.
From meat and potatoes
With every meal,
And spicy hot salsa.
From hard work,
And unwavering faith.
From respect taught early
With hard hands and heavy belts.

I’m from the Earth.
From the cornfields.
From oceans of golden tassel.
From small towns with nosy neighbors
And bleeding hearts.
From river swimming,
And bare-foot wandering.
From deer hunters with shotguns
And bright orange jackets.
From fresh country air.
And nowhere land.
From street dances,
And state fairs.
From simple people,
And old fashioned ways.

I’m from here and there
And everywhere.
From changing winds,
And changing times.
From big dreams.
And crashing waves.
From never-before0seen.
From new beats.
And breaking free.
From soul searching
And heart finding,
And discovering me.
