Infatuation

Crowded hallway conceals the faces
no individuals, only groups
voices ring out from everywhere.

Turning to look at the clock,
you catch my eye.
We both stop, stare, connect.
the noise is gone,
my ears now flooded with only the sound of my pounding heart.
The other faces now invisible,
there is only you and me.

You smile, my breath catches.
I want you closer, touch you, feel you, be with only you.
But before I smile back, you change it all.

My heart breaks as you walk away.
We never had a chance.

The noise and reality of those around me returns.
Only I am bothered.
No one else felt our personal exchange.
