The Beginning of Forever

I Need A Break

*Rory’s POV*
*The Next Morning*

“Shoot!” I sat up in my bed. Next thing I knew, the chair next to the bed feel backwards.

“Holy Jesus!”

“What the—?” I pulled myself to look on the floor. “Embry?” I asked, as I saw him on the floor. He put his hand up and waved.

“Hey, Rory. How’s you sleep?”

“Em? Were you here all night?” he sat up to check the clock on my desk.

“Yeah. I think so.” I shook my head at him. “You told me not to leave.”

“I did?” He nodded. “Oh, man.” I put my head in my hands.

“Rory, I didn’t upset you did I?”

“No, I’m upset with myself. I turned him away. I hurt him.”

“Jake is a big boy. He will be fine.”

“And then last night. In front of my dad and Karen.”

“That was my fault.”

“No, it was me. I’m—I don’t know. That’s not me. I’m always in control.” I looked up at him, feeling tears sting my eyes. “I almost phased in front of my parents.” He wrapped his arms around my shoulders.

“It happens to the best of us. And you have definitely handled this better than anyone of us have.”

“I need to go.” I threw his arms off of me, and got up from the bed.

“Go? Go where?” he followed.

“I need to get away. Not far. I just need some peace for a day.”

“Where are you goin?”

“Jacob’s. Then Sam’s to tell him what I’m doing.”

“What are you doing?”

“Going to the Cullen’s” I said heading down the stairs.

“Rory!” But I was already out of the front door. I ran to the forest. I tried to focus on something else so Jacob wouldn’t know what I was planning on doing. I phased and ran into Jacob’s house.

“Hey, Billy!”

“Rory? What’s going on?”

“Nothing.” I threw open the door to Jacob’s room and pulled open my drawers.

“Then what’s with the rush?”

“I just really need to be somewhere.” I closed the door and changed my clothes. I grabbed my bag and my car key from the dresser. I opened the door and saw Billy sitting in his chair.

“What is wrong?” He asked me. “You can ignore me but eventually I’ll figure it out. I did raise two daughters.”

“I know.”

“And you know I consider you another daughter.” I sighed. He smiled, knowing he caught me.

“Billy…I really need to go. Can I talk to you about it when I get home?” I begged. He stared for a moment. Then he back his chair out of the way. “Thanks, B.” I kissed his cheek. “I love you.”

“Just go.” I smiled. I took off out the door. I went to the side of the house and unhooked Toby.

“Hey, babe.” I said to him. He barked. “Wanna go for a ride?” I picked him up and walked him to the car, putting him in the passenger seat. “Next, stop Sam’s.”

*~*~*~*

I knocked three times on his front door.

“Sam, open up! We need to talk!” I shouted. He opened the door, rubbing his eye.

“Rory? Aren’t you supposed to be—”

“Oh patrol. Yes. But I can’t be in Jake’s head right now.”

“So, what are you saying?”

“I want patrol tonight, instead. I know I haven’t exactly been your best friend lately, but I really need this. Please.” He sighed.

“Alright. I want you in the clearing at ten sharp. If you’re not, I swear. You will be patrolling for forty-eight hours.”

“But Christmas is Wed—”

“I don’t care, Rory!” I winced back as I saw him tremble. “You have been skipping out since Friday!” his arms started shaking.

“Okay, Sam. I promise. Ten sharp.” I backed away. As I got in the car, I saw him slam the door. “I hope Emily will be okay.” I looked at Toby and he barked. He didn’t stop. “What’s wrong, babe?” he stopped barking. I listened. In the distance I could here howling. Toby howled back. “Alright, Toby. He’s fine. Let’s go.” I I took the on-ramp to the highway, I swear I saw Jacob running alongside the road, still in the forest. I sped up, leading him away.
