Someday I'll Have You

I stepped into the lobby of the funeral hall with a bouquet of roses in my hand. Alexis saw me and hurried over to my side. She grabbed my other hand and smoothed out my jacket. The oak casket came into view, Mikayla’s blank face seemingly in a peaceful sleep. It’s amazing what these people at a funeral home can do with a dead body to make it look pretty. I cringed at the memory of her death.

“I’m so sorry about your loss!” was heard over and over throughout the night. Mikayla’s mom was crying on anyone’s shoulder that would come near.

"I heard she was murdered!”

“They say she got hit by a car.”

“The police say it’s too horrible to tell.”

These are the whispers heard around the room. But they don’t know the truth. They don’t know what she did. She’s finally gone. We can be happy.

A Change Of Pace blared through the speakers as I threw the last of my bags into Maria’s trunk and slammed the door. I looked back at my house, smiling. I would never to deal with the immature drama of high school again. But at the same time I have to leave everything behind. Alexis is going to a college 100 miles away from mine, I won’t be able to see her until Christmas vacation! Who knows what will happen between now and then? Maybe we’ll find other people and move on? Maybe-

“Jesse, stop thinking about it! Its not that long!” Alexis said and hugged me.

“I can’t help it!” I pouted and opened the driver’s door. She kissed me on the cheek through the rolled down window. I put the key in the ignition and roared the engine.

“I love you.” I said.

“I love you too.” She smiled.
