We Don't Have to be a Tragedy

Act III, Scene XI

Romeo’s Point of View

I looked at Juliet’s smirk and groaned. This could mean danger…oh, I know the perfect song to sing next. I just have to drag Todd up with me, as he’s the only one who’d know what the song was.

“I guess it’s now or never, eh?” I finally managed to say.

“Atta boy!” Sam grinned roguishly.

My music started. I took a deep breath, only too aware of all the eyes on me, and Juliet’s beautiful smirk. I knew I was about to make a complete and utter fool of myself, with the epic Brendan Urie’s vocals…I would put him in his early grave if he were here.

“ ‘Sit tight, I'm gonna need you to keep time
Come on just snap, snap, snap your fingers for me
Good, good now we're making some progress
Come on just tap, tap, tap your toes to the beat
And I believe this may call for a proper introduction, and well
Don't you see, I'm the narrator, and this is just the prologue?

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives

Applause, applause, no wait wait
Dear studio audience, I've an announcement to make:
It seems the artists these days are not who you think
So we'll pick back up on that on another page

And I believe this may call for a proper introduction, and well
Don't you see, I'm the narrator and this is just the prologue

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives

Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, swear to shake it up

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives

Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes.’ ”

Fool. Fool. Fool…

That was all that ran through my head, and then I got a bit of applause. I looked up, embarrassed, to see Juliet with a slight grin on her face.

I decided my other song could wait until later. I just had to find out what was making Juliet grin.

Juliet’s Point of View

Romeo wasn’t too bad at singing. As far as voices go, his was all right. He just didn’t know how to use it to perfection…but with a Panic! At the Disco song, he did about as good as could be expected of someone taking a stab at Brendan Urie’s songs.

When he asked why I was grinning, I told him honestly that he wasn’t half bad, and that I’d actually been wondering if he could sing at all, since he never did sing…at least around me. He laughed my compliment off, and I’m sure he thought I was just being nice because that’s how we both are, but it’s fine. I know that what I meant was what I said and that I don’t sugarcoat things when talking to people I know.

“Anyone for some food now?” Ry said with a lopsided grin, waving Maria over.

We all agreed, suddenly realizing our growling tummies, and all ordered some sort of sandwich or burger - something that didn’t require that much attention so we could watch everyone’s ascent into Whitney’s “fame” or their descent into Whitney’s “failure”.

I survived another hour…and then I got forced back up onstage with Taylor and Trish (Sarah didn’t want in on the number) and we all collaborated on What’s it Feel Like to be a Ghost by Taking Back Sunday. Guys sing it, but it’s whatever. That’s never stopped me before, if there’s nothing about another girl that’s dirty in it. The closest I get to that is I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry. Which isn’t very close to things dirty with a girl. But still.

The lights dimmed after that, and Sam kept me up while the others went and sat back down.

“Now, we’re going for the soft, romantic period. Fifteen minutes of those love songs you can’t help but love, right? I’m keeping Miss Juliet up here for the first one just to show you how it’s done. Juliet, what song would you like to start with?”

I groaned good-naturedly, grinning all the while.

“Ah, give me…” I paused, then asked Sam without the microphone, “Would you count That’s What You Get by Paramore as a love song?”

“Sort of…” Sam said, “But we’re looking for things a bit…toned down, if you know what I‘m getting at here.”

“Yeah. Give me a minute to think, then. I got rid of one of my better ones earlier…”

We both kind of laughed as I stood trying to think of a good song to sing.

After a few moments, I suggested, “Crush, by Mandy Moore?”

Sam went to play the song. I doubted he’d ever heard it, but it was a cutesy little song, and he probably accepted it by the title.

After a few moments, I heard the music start, and the words rushed back to me. I was still glancing at my prompt, however, because it had been so long since I’d heard the song.

I took a deep breath.

“ ‘You know everything that I’m afraid of
You do everything I wish I did
Everybody wants you, everybody loves you

I know I should tell you how I feel
I wish everyone would disappear
Every time you call me, I’m too scared to be me
And I’m too shy to say

Ooh, I got a crush on you
I hope you feel the way that I do
I get a rush
When I’m with you
Ooh, I’ve got a crush on you
A crush on you

You know I’m the one that you can talk to
And sometimes you tell me things that I don’t want to know
I just want to hold you
And you say exactly how you feel about her
I wonder, could you ever think of me that way

Ooh, I got a crush on you
I hope you feel the way that I do
I gotta rush
When I’m with you
Ooh, I’ve got a crush on you
A crush on you

Ooh, I wish I could tell somebody
But there’s no one to talk to, nobody knows
I’ve got a crush on you
A crush on you, I got a crush

You say everything that no one says
But I feel everything that you’re afraid to feel
I will always want you, I will always love you

Ooh, I got a crush on you
I hope you feel the way that I do
I get a rush
When I’m with you
Ooh, I’ve got a crush on you
A crush on you.’ ”

First of all:

Panic! At the Disco owns the first song. I claim no ownership of The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage.
Also, Crush is sung by Mandy Moore (this version, NOT David Archuletta or any of the others) and I don't claim it, either.

I hope you all enjoyed the chapter, I wanted to get something out, and sorry if you're annoyed by the taking-up-of-space with songs.

I'm getting ready to go to sleep, so g'night, ya'll. Leave a comment, 'kay? Means loads =3

PS: if you've ever read/seen/watched Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, or Cardcaptor Sakura, I found a video on Cardcaptor Sakura AGES ago with Sakura and Syaoran. Like, it's been three years since I watched it. and i still remembered 'Crush' from it. So, yeah.
